wyoming preference point question
« on: May 06, 2016, 07:51:56 PM »
Ok looking to burn some points this year and just wanted to double check a couple things.

So if memory servers me right. Your points are used in your first choice. So if you apply for a first and don't get drawn. You can choose and draw your 2nd choice without burning up your points correct?

Also with the deer some of the general areas say otc. Yet looking through eastmans they require a couple points to draw. So do you apply for those just like the limited quota deer units?

thanks in advance.

They have the general season regional tags and then they have the limited quota units. You need to look at the map of the deer areas to understand it. Wyoming residents can hunt any of those general areas with an OTC tag. But non residents have to draw a regional tag. You're right in that only 1st choice tags use your points. But you really can't draw anything good as a second choice.

If  the  nonresident  applicant  wants  to  accumulate  preference  points  in  the  initial  license  drawing,  they  must select the fee option  that includes  the preference point fees  for  full  price  elk,  deer and  antelope  licenses.   The preference point fees  that must be remitted  are $50  for  elk,  $40  for  deer  and  $30  for  antelope ($10  for  youth  for  each  species).  These  applicants  will  be awarded a preference point if unsuccessful in drawing their first choice.

For  nonresident  full price  elk,  full price  deer and  full  price  antelope,  an  individual’s  accumulated  preference  points  are  only considered  in  the  limited  quota drawing  for  the  applicant’s  first  choice  in  the  preference  point  drawing.

If the applicant submits the appropriate  point  fee  with  their limited  quota license  application  for the  initial license  drawing  and  does  not  draw  their first  choice,  they  will be  awarded  a  preference  point  for the  year in  which  the application  was  submitted.  Drawing  a license  for  your  second  or  third  choice  does  not  cause  preference  points  to  be  deleted and the applicant will still be awarded a preference point for the year.

Some units have a general season (otc for residents and draw for nonresidents) and a late season (draw for residents and nonresidents).  That might be what you are looking at.

Yes that is what I was wondering on that front.

I have just been buying points for 5 years and not putting in so wanted to double check before submitting stuff.

My lope tag should be 100% with the special this year. The deer tag if I go special I might have a chance at my first pick. If not being a special. I still have a close to 70% chance to draw a good general area tag with zero points used in my 2nd choice slot.

Also keep in mind that if you draw a regional tag, that the different subunits within that unit might have different season dates.

For sure. I already looked at the 3 units and they are all about the same other then it looks like one is mule deer and the other 2 units in the general area are mule or whitetail. They are also also 3 pt min by the looks of the regs. I could not find the 2016 dates but saw the 2015's listed on Wyoming's site.

My game plan is to hunt the deer and antelope at the same time. Since the seasons look to over lap and there are 2 deer units in my lope area.
