New to training.

Hi all,
I'm very new to training, but I have taken to it and love spending the time with my pup working! I got her about 4 months ago and she's a little over 6 months old now, we've been working with a trainer since I got her on obedience and she's been amazing. I'm at the point with her that I would like to start training her to be a waterfowl dog. I've never trained a duck dog so I'm kind of looking for some guidance or a club, and direction on where to find things I'll need like birds, and places to stage training (Am I allowed to use the state wildlife areas out of season for training?). I live in Centralia so if there's anyone that could point me in a direction I'd really appreciate it!

Newaukum Retriever Club has a training day coming up (Oct 2st I think). Cascade HRC and Whistling Wings HRC are done for the year. Lower Columbia HRC has a training day coming up soon (end of Sept.). Too far for me but not as bad from your area.

I breast the birds I kill during the season and duct tape them closed -> freeze -> training birds and no worries about wanton waste and no paying 10 to 15 bucks for training birds.

I think you can use the wildlife areas it's just kind of a bummer for anyone who might be trying to hunt there. Actually now that I think about it I think all hunting wildlife areas are closed to training during the season. You don't wanna be out there training anyways when people could be hunting.

You are within an hours drive of lots of great trainers too!

I can't take credit for the billiance as I saw it on another forum. I've tried zip ties but I think I prefer duck tape or electrical tape.

Thank you for the replies! I got a hold of tim with nwrrc today and he was very friendly and welcoming! And it's great to hear that I'm so close to good trainers! I definitely want to be very hands on and involved with her training, but I also feel like i definitely need the guidance of a trainer. So thank you very much for the replies pointing me in the right direction!

If you are looking for a pro trainer I would check in with Andy Fontenot.  He is in Centralia.

If you're looking at training yourself I would invest in the Mike Lardy Total Retriever Training DVD's. Its a great way to take your pup through the basics and into advanced work. Its a bit pricey, but it's been very valuable to me and his philosophy and methods fall in line with a lot of pro trainers.
