10 Year Old's First Grouse hunt
« on: September 15, 2017, 05:51:09 PM »
Proud of my 10 year old, completed Hunter's Ed all on his own last week!  I've never hunted small game and figure it is a great way to start for him.  I was thinking of hitting maybe the Nile area, but looking for suggestions to get him hooked on birds.  Not your honey hole, but a general point in the right direction would be appreciated.

Drive some of the lesser traveled forest roads in Gifford Pinchot national forest. they are in there.

Find some closed/decomissioned roads and start walking.

I was over in the Nile area for elk. Never see many grouse at all. See more walking up old logging roads in western wa pretty much anywhere. Also up near Winthrop on old logging roads as well. Pretty far drive though. Up cub creek off the Rendezvous/Gun Ranch road outside of Winthrop. Take a left at the baseball field coming into town. That's where I went when I got out of hunters ed. Good luck!

My youngest boy and I hit up NF-1601, NF-625, and the road in between those two. We didn't find any grouse, but found alot of Elk. This was last Saturday. If your going to go on the Nile side, I would check out the NF 1500 roads.

Good Luck.

I am going tomorrow morning early, but the HWY 12 side.

If you're willing to drive to Sultan, I can tell you a spot to shoot some ruffed grouse.

Find creek's, and streams with berries around them preferably with conifer trees as well. Just walk those areas and you will find some ruffed grouse.

I went up on the Hwy 12 area yesterday. Spooked 3 of them ruffed buggers, in the type of environment I just explained.

I don't know if I would be willing to travel far for just grouse. Mainly because you just don't know for sure if your going to see them.

I can't wait to take my boys on Oct 7th for Quail.

Thanks for the help yall.  I haven't been into the small game thing till my boy got hunter ed.  We will actually be at the national hunt & fish day in the Monroe area this Saturday and were thinking of hitting up some spots around there after the event and learning some new areas for both of us.
