Montana Block Management. Reservation areas
« on: August 14, 2018, 06:03:13 PM »
Are the large chunks of Block management that are only accessible by reservation worth it ? Found a couple last year I wouldn't mind checking out , but not sure if it would be worth losing a day to do .

They arent all created equal thats for sure. Scouting and the surrounding habit will play a big factor.  Block Management overall in MT is a pretty good deal for hunters though.

The reservation system has always been a bit sketchy in my mind as the reservations are run by the landowner.  One year, I called at the opening time of 7 am, got ahold of them at 7:02 and all the reservations were taken.  Other years, the phone just rings and rings and nobody answers.

The one time I did get a reservation, the owner was not happy that I couldn't show up a week in advance to pick up the reservation slip.

I would try, but focus more effort on the ones that don't require reservations.

Anyone have one of the elk shoulder season permits?

Same ordeal every year....you just have to keep trying and hitting redial.  If no one answers try again later.  Spent 45 minutes hitting redial....finally got through...dispatched to another person for the specific ranch I hunt....got disconnected....redialed.....left VM....got call back....finally signed up by mid-day.  It's not convenient but I won't complain.  Gladly willing to run the gauntlet in trade for an opportunity to hunt thousands of acres by myself for a couple of days.
