Out of state rifle hunters, scope mounted or not in gun case?
« on: September 21, 2018, 09:10:30 PM »
I am curious how those of you that travel to hunt setup your cases/foam?  I have a Pelican 1750 and I am going to travel to AZ in Early Nov for a hunt.  Last time I went down I went with a pair of AR's.  Both had QD mounted optics so to save space and ensure they both fit I removed the glass and packed it in my carry on.  I only ended up using one rifle the entire hunt as I never got a deer so had no opportunity to hunt other game (coyotes, etc)

This year I am taking a different base rifle a 308 bolt gun.  It has a scope on it that is mounted with QD mounts, like the AR's had.  So far looking at it in the case with scope mounted it is eating a ton of space leaving no room for any second long gun.  SO I am wondering how many of you remove your glass all the time, or how you handle trying to fit multiple rifles in one case.  I also need to allow room for ammo.

I've checked two scopes rifles in my Pelican case several times. If you cant get two of your rifles in your case, you might consider getting a Tuff Pak case.

My guns going to alaska and back travel with glass on them bolts out of the gun.( talked to a guy that had the shipper drop something heavy on the case and busted the handle off).
I just take two cases if i have two guns going.

I’ve done quite a bit of traveling to hunts in North America and abroad and have never taken a scope off a rifle. Only once can I say the scope was “off” while checking after arriving.

Thanks guys.  My issue is not concern about scope being banged around and poi altered, it is a space issue.   I will not be able to bring a second long gun if I leave the scope mounted as shown in picture.

Last time I made this trip I removed glass.  We sight in before we go out the 1st day so I can always adjust.  I was just curious if any of you remove it for space considerations.  I think I might just leave it all together and stick to one gun.  and bring more ammo for this one.

I am guessing you just put the bolt in the case or do you put in another bag/carry on to save case space?

I wouldn’t have that bolt in the case for fear of damaging the scope.
If you aint hunting, you aint livin'

Maybe put it down on barrel end of case, or are you worried about it getting between layers and migrating?

I put mine at either end . I've never had them move . You could throw it in a sock so it tends to grip the foam a little better if your concerned about it moving. my cases are pretty tight though.
looking at your i'd have it down at the barrel end. the stock is a little wider and if your case doesn't compress good it might jiggle around

I cut the top foam layer and can easily fit two rifle, bolt out, mags out and ammo.
