Chiwawa Rifle tag Nov. 1st-18th
« on: October 22, 2007, 06:24:56 PM »
I have a late season tag for the Chiwawa Rifle hunt, Nov. 1-18. I really do not know what to expect. I went over last weekend saw seven does while trying to learn the area. The country looks great, and I am sure I will be seeing a lot more deer when the leaves drop. If any one has any pointers I would sure appreciate them. Thank you in advance.

I've hunted Natapoc and the mountains East of Nason creek.  I think the name of the mountain is Round Mountain.  I found the deer to be in thick cover.  I've been thinking of hunting just above the golf course near the Lake Wenatchee state park.  Google earth the area and you'll see there is a road through the golf course that continues up the mountain.  I would hunt above the course or travel the dirt road above Nason Creek heading back toward hwy 2.  Stay just above the cabins.  I've heard there are deer grazing in some of the yards.  I figure they must venture back up the mountain.

I'd hunt the Entiat side of the unit.

We hunted Chiwawa the whole week, and had to bail and fill two doe tags from other GMU's for meat. Not a lot of action yet. The snow helped show what few were there already. You are a lucky dog with that tag...

That hunt was real tough.  That country got so overgrown after they stopped clearcutting.  I failed to fill my doe tag back there for the muzzleloader season.

took a buck outa the chiwawa on friday. saw A TON of deer, mostly locals no doubt. unless the fog completely screws you, you shouldn't have much problem filling your tag. hunt the snow line... the north or south side of mad river, east of mavrick saddle is a good place to start, either side you'll see bucks. oh, and bring chains..... it gets (has already gotten) nasty up there.

I agree with the Wrangler.  Hunt the snow line and be ready to chain up.  I drew the late Swakane tag last year and chained up every day I hunted.

I had that tag a couple years ago. Stay in about 6-12" of snow on the Entiat side and you will see plenty of animals. You might try Tyee Ridge.
Good luck.

The rut is on so look for a mature buck with any group of does you spot.  Be sure to know the unit boundaries (Round Mountain & Natapoc are in the Swakane GMU).  Hunting from the Lake Wenatchee Side you should go high like up the Chickamin Road or hike up on Estes Butte. The Maverick Saddle area could be getting good by Nov. 1.  I would also hunt the Entiat, Tyee Mountain.  In the burns you can glass up bucks pretty easily.  That is a great tag.

(Round Mountain & Natapoc are in the Swakane GMU).

I beg to differ with you.  Just look at Hwy 2.  It bends at Coles Corner just as it does in the map of Chiwawa - bottom center.  I was a bit concerned.  I'd hate to have hunted an area that I wasn't positive was the right area as described in the regs.

I have hunted the Chiwawa area quite a bit. The Chikamin, Basalt ridges, and Maverick Saddle are excellent places. You also might go up the Little Wenatchee and go above the viewpoint and hit that ridge. The big bucks migrate right down there. Round top mtn towards the lookout is a good place for some big boys. Any questions feel free to ask.
