Hey guys,
We are looking to start a new hunting camp in GMU 172. Before we start doing our work and scouting, would love for any info and ideas where to set up. Elk, Modern, thank you for any insight.

My family has been hunting there since the 1930s. I haven’t missed a season in over 30 years. It’s an amazing place to be. Country is so beautiful. But to be honest if your looking to fill a tag this isn’t the unit. The wolves came in about 8 years ago and have destroyed the deer and elk population. Being completely honest. If your looking for a great camping trip it’s a great unit. If your looking to fill a tag odds are very slim. Not to mention the country is one of the toughest to hunt in the state. Pm me if you have more questions

Just got back from the upper area of 172, picking huckleberries and trying to find a bear. I talked to the ranch hand who is watching over the cows and calves on the grazing permit up there. He is a lifetime resident of Anatone and rides his horse all around that area where his cows are. He said he sees a few big bulls but very few other elk. The wolf pack has pushed the elk down into the flats above the Grande Rhonde. The wolves are running from up in the Lick Creek unit down to Grouse Flats. He gave me his contact number in case there is ever a wolf hunting season in my lifetime. It is a sad situation.

That pack just got famous for livestock depredation too.
