Nighttime kokes
« on: May 29, 2020, 03:58:10 PM »
Anybody on here part of the lantern fleet that hits Loon, Deer, Davis, and other lakes for Kokanee at night?  Or is this a forbidden topic?  :chuckle:

I used to partake every summer back in the day, I sure miss it. Really fun fishery.  Can't imagine why those techniques wouldn't work for Western WA kokes as well?

I don't know why i have never thought of this..  I know a few places this could be done.  what do you use for bait.  I assume they are at differnt depths and maybe a little closer to the surface?

I am sure you could admit to just how brisk it get's in the middle if July watching for the tale tell dip of your rod.  :chuckle:

Or the fog roll in and you have little or no clue where the launch is in the dark.

 :chuckle:.
Fog was no fun. It was a real slow cruise back to where you thought the ramp was.  Ears straining, eyes glued to the old green box Lowrance Lo-K-Tor watching depths.  No gps back in those days!

My Grandpa invited the neighbor, Steve, along to fish Davis Lake one July night. He shows up at Grandpa's house with shorts on - it got to probably 85 degrees that day.  "Where's your clothes?" asked Grandpa, as we're loading our duck hunting gear in the Travelall.

"I'll be fine, it's the middle of July!" says Steve.

Steve wasn't fine.  Thankfully we got our fish quickly and got off the water by midnight.  Steve was probably hypothermic at that point, but wouldn't dare admit he was cold to Grandpa.
I had to give him credit for that.  :chuckle:

I was that guy a few times.

How about when a bat hits your rod while doing a flyby in your boat lights?  Something about boron rods made it not show up on their echo location...

My Dad used to describe the as fishing for ghosts.

After seeing where you people have to wait until they unlock the gates on the launches glad I have access to my night waters.

I got to fish Loon Lake at night when I was six years old. We stopped on our way to the Calgary Stampede Rodeo. It was one of my most memorable fishing trips.
Not only did I get to stay up with grownups, but I also got my own tin cup with "special fishing juice" and elk Jerky, my "special fishing juice" tasted a lot like hot chocolate.  :dunno:
Not sure what my uncle's tasted like, but he got awful funny as the night went on.
We caught a bunch of Kokes, but the highlight was when something grabbed my line and took of! It smashed my finger against the gunnel, but I held on.
It took almost all my line out, then we heard a huge splash like something jumped and it broke off.
My uncle said it was probably a big Mackinaw. I had no clue what that was at the time or if they existed in Loon Lake, As far as I was concerned, it was a whale!
I would love to go Koke fishing at night again. I doubt it would match the first trip.

Could have been a Mackinaw. Here's one my Grandpa caught in Loon back in the early 80's, I believe.  I do know he caught it on a Lucky Louie plug.  I still have it.

Man I sure miss those days!  Was a big part of the lantern brigade 24yrs ago...  Best times ever damn near lived at that lake..  One 3 day weekend our group got 248 Kokes!    Pard was an expert smoker.  Nothing smokes up like Kokes.  If I recall his brine had Aple juice and he also used apple wood to smoke...  Smallie fishing was great along with some killer top water action!

My first night headed into the lanterns there was quite the commotion!  Whoz got a net! Whoz got a net!  well we hadn't anchored up yet and we had a net! Old guy on a bass boat running around it chasin a fish!  Everyone nearby fingered it was a mackinaw.   I was the lucky bastid to net that feesh!    If my memory serves me well and it prolly doesnt it was like a 14lb Brown.    Best times every.  Stayed a a lil resort for weeks.  I'd drive to Spokane for work the wife and kids hung out and had a great time.  I really miss those days.
