Savage Ultralite
« on: September 06, 2020, 09:44:47 AM »
Anyone seen one in a store here is Washington?  I am looking for the 300 wsm specifically but would like to put my hands on any caliber before potentially ordering on line.

Also.....I looked at buds guns shop online and some of the reviews are very troublesome.  I know a few people on here have had good reviews......anyone with bad?  Should I steer clear of this company?

thanks

I have hunted with Savage firearms for over 40 years never had a problem with any i have owned. Easy to change barrels if you want. More accurate out of the box than a lot of others.

Yes, I agree....I too have owned and hunted with savage for many years.  I have not owned one with the accustock yet.  I'm ready to buy but hate buying online when I h ave never actually held a certain model.  I hate surprises.....LOL

Should have some hands on time with one early next week.  Be glad to give you thoughts after we get scope mounted and some lead down range.

Thanks

I have been researching them for a couple months now and.......WELLL.....I got a little impatient and ordered one about the same time you were messaging me.   :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

Just went out to buy some ammo  :yike: :yike: :yike: :yike:  $116 later for 40 rounds.  This winter I will be loading custom ammo for it....but in the mean while I will break it in with factory and maybe let my son kill his deer with it this year.  I will be topping it with a Nightforce SHV and likely shooting it with a suppressor.   I will need to buy a brake for it because the suppressor can't be taken to Canada.....I would be very curious what brake you get, assuming you get one.

I likely will not lay hands on mine till after archery elk.  I would really like to hear your review after you shoot yours.

Just picked mine up and found out the hard way that savage is using #8 screws in this gun instead of the standard #6 theyve always used before, so the warne rail i bought wont work, just ordered the right one from egw.  Its always something.

Yes, this has been a problem on quite a few of the savages starting about 10 years ago.  I was pretty impatient so I bought a 20 MOA rail and drilled the holes out to make them work.  Second gun I have done this with and it has worked so far.  Next time you can pick up a few 8-40 screws it is worth the money to have them on hand if you like savages.

Yeah the 8 40 screws wont seat into the warne rail i bought, and i didnt want to screw with drilling it out, so i just ordered the egw rail, seemed easier.  And a spare set of screws with it.  Didnt know this has been going on that long.  I have 2 of the model 16 lightweight hunters and they use the 6.  Oh well, just have to wait a few more days to get my scope mounted and play.

   When torquing the EGW screws be careful not to damage the rail.  I had a screw go right through the aluminum rail..... :bash: :bash: :bash:  Don't quote me, but I think the first rifles they did that on were the BA Stealth series.  It is a huge pain in the arse and an even bigger let down for the shooter who crazy excited to get his gun set up....just to have this set back.  I have yet to find a rail in stores that fit the savage with 8-40 screws.

Did you buy an ultralite?  What caliber?

I have a buddy who picked one up. He put a bolt lift kit in his to smooth it out.
I'm not a fan of the stock, but the action & proof barrel seem really nice.

Just got back from the range.  Rifle shoots pretty good with factory ammo.  Today was a sight in day and break in day.  It appears to really like the nosler factory ammo 180 grain accubond.  The last four rounds were 3/4-1” with my son shooting.  I decided to go with a brake vs the 30 cal can just due to balance issues.  The rifle is so stupid lite that the can really through it off balance.  It also made it heavier and my son had a harder time with the extra weight and length.

Tomorrow I will be shooting it again and working on ballistics for the scope.  If it’s not raining so hard I will take pics of the target to share.  I can’t wait for this winter when I can work a custom load.   Right now I need to get it running for my boy to whack a bear and maybe an elk.

Tomorrow 13 -17mph winds, gusts to 26 here, make it tough to get that .308 dialed tight, we'll see.

I say we keep it all in one thread so it is easy to find for others.   I’m headed back out today to do a little more shooting.   I will also be updating with results as time passes and rounds go down range.   I am still waiting for a resolution from savage or the retailer I purchased mine from....it didn’t come with the additional stock pieces and I need to raise the comb and shorten the LOP for my son.   Hopefully this gets rectified quickly.

so i was initially pretty disappointed with this gun, after both of my savage model 16 lightweight hunters shooting 1/2 - 1/4 moa easily at 200 yards with factory ammo.  Expected the same from the 110 ultralite.  First 6-8 types of factory ammo i tried through it werent worth a damn.  Thats including low to high end stuff.  After thinking i should sell the gun or rebarrel it i took my old mans advice and tried sierra gamechangers.  Didnt expect much, but that made the difference between a gun i needed to get rid of, and a gun i will take hunting.  Really, realistically pretty good groups for a hunting rifle with a 1-8 scope.  But damned if i can find anything else it can shoot worth a damn.  This is what its doing for 4 shot groups (4 round mag).  If youre going to buy a .308 savage ultralite, i highly suggest you pay the money for a box of 165gr sierra game changers.  Its the only thing my gun will shoot.

For comparison i shot one 4 shot group today with my 16 lightweight hunter .308 (discontinued model) that i havent shot in over a year.  It likes the 165 grain superformance gmx.  3-9×33 scope.  This is the 4 shot group.  The one flier i feel is my fault not the guns.  I think the 16 LWH is just a better gun all around (i own two) but it just doesnt have the adjustable stock or threaded barrel.  For anybody looking for an extremely lightweight accurate gun, if you can find a 16LWH id snatch it up.  :twocents:

And this was 4 shots at 200 yards with my 16 LWH .243 on the day i was sighting it in. 2-7×33 scope.  95 grain federal fusion = 1/8th moa, go figure  :dunno:

Joining the party,....just got a 6.5 Creed for my kid.

Spend about 2 hours.  Tested out ammo with 3 shot groups, 15 minutes apart, after a good initial break-in following proof's instructions.

I also initially torqued down the action to just snug on the front bolt, then pounded the stock on the ground a bit to seat the recoil lug, then tightened down to 10 in/lb.  Then another pounding, then the back to 10 in/lb.  Then the front to 35 in/lb then the back to 30 in/lb.  Not sure if that helps or not, but read up a bunch on it.  Seems like you need to make sure that lug is seated.

Hornady ELDX 143 were the winner, they shot .5 MOA consistently.

Federal Terminal Ascent 130 were the loser, they were about 1.5"

Nosler Accubond LR 142 shot 2 in the same hole almost exactly, i'd put it at .1" MOA, but had 1 1" flier.  Could have been me, I didn't shoot another group.  Overall 1" MOA

Exact same thing with the Federal Berger Hybrid 135.  2 .25" with a 1" flier on third shot.  Same could have been me but didn't shoot another group.  Overall 1" MOA

I had Hornady 129 SST to try too, but didn't want to try those as I like the ELDX.

After all of this, shot 1 ELDX for final sight in.

Waited 15 minutes, shot 1 more.  Waited 15 minutes shot 1 more.  All sub .5" again.

This has been probably my best shooting factory gun, my first savage, and am very happy!  I'd highly recommend this gun.

Though I don't know how you all can shoot anything hitting harder than a 308 out of an ultralight setup like this!

Savage made right by the missing parts.  Finally shortened the LOP and put a comb riser so it fits my boy.  Mine shoots factory nosler accubonds and nosler monolithics the best.  I will be reloading so I’m not overly concerned with factory performance but for my sons deer tag this year he will be shooting the accubonds.

With a muzzle brake the 300wsm is pretty tame and fun to shoot.

Nowhere online can i find a spare magazine for this rifle.  Even on savsges website none of the pictures match.  Ive emailed their support twice and they have not responded.  Anybody have a clue about a part number or where i can get one?  Short action.

I bought two for my 300wsm off of gunmag.com.  They are the new savage axis mags.

https://gunmagwarehouse.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=savage%20axis

I don't see one for the 308.  but hopefully looking for the new axis mag helps in your search.

I was very intrested in the savage ultralight. But once i got one in my hands i knew i didnt want it that bad. The first strike is there amazing "high quality" stocks. Second for just alittle more money you can get alot more rifle from other companies. And 3rd was the barrel length. I will be buying a tikka or a Christensen. I know savages are damn fine shooter but i hate how their top of the line hunting rifle still feels cheep

I have had ours for about two months now and it has killed twice already, with factory ammo none the less.  When I get time to reload it will be an even better shooter.   I’ll say this.....to each their own....I have a Christiansen carbon fiber barrel 26” 300 win mag that I paid $600 more than the savage.   I would buy another savage before I gambled on another Christiansen!!!   That was and is the most finicky rifle I have ever loaded for.   It has something rattling in the stock and for the money it really isn’t anything special.  After I found a load that worked it does shoot nice and is accurate....but this savage is equally as accurate out of the box.   I also love the endless adjustment options to the accustock.  It is primarily gonna be my sones rifle so we shorten the LOP and raised the comb.  Fits him like a glove.

That savage ultralight will not be that price next year. They will be going up. I spoke to one of there pro staffers and they even said they are losing money on that gun not making much. All you have to do is look the barrel up thats a 800 dollar barrel all day just to buy. Than the machined action to boot. The Christianson is 700 bucks more and will not be as accurate period

I agree that it does feel cheap in the hands....I bought a Browning Hells Canyon for less, running less than .5 moa on it regardless of who is shooting. It's killed 5 deer and a antelope this year. I have savages as well that shoot great, but at that price point you would have thought there would have been some stock improvement.

If somebody made a nice stock for Savage I would buy an ultralite but no matter how hard I look I can't seem to find one. I was set to buy a Ridgeline but I really don't like that the bolt doesn't lock, it only has a 2 position safety and no box magazine. Then there is issues with accuracy on some Ridgelines. So the Savage seems like the ticket, everybody says they're extremely accurate but the stock is just janky. When I went looked at it I didn't think it was that bad but it's not great. Nobody's made custom stocks for the Savage 110 action that's been around for a hundred does anyone think they might start now?
