Toyota Highlander reviews?
« on: March 08, 2021, 01:00:49 PM »
I've never owned a Toyota but figured a bunch of people around here might have.  Does anyone have any positive or negative reviews of the Highlander?  In particular, the 2016 or 2017 version.  I'm mainly interested in longevity, reliability, scheduled big maintenance things and any problems known to be common.

Thanks in advance!

Why the highlander vs. the 4runner???

I can't speak to the highlander but we purchased a new 15 4runner and it has been a great rig.  We chose the 4runner for the 4 wheel drive capability vs the all wheel drive that I believe came standard in the highlander.  We considered the highlander but the awd was the deal breaker for us.  I'm not sure a guy can go wrong buying any toyota.  They are great rigs that hold up to high mileage.  Our 2015 4 runner has 48K and I think it runs better now than it did when it was new.

I'm actually looking for a family member that is completely vehicle influent.  No hunting or offroad of any kind is going to be happening.  Worst case is snowy winter interstate driving.

Then you can't go wrong with the highlander.  AWD will suit them great and it is a toyota.  A coworker has one and loves it but she also does nothing more than road driving.

Bought the wife an 18 highlander. Replaced on 04 4 runner. I actually like the highlander better than the 4 runner. No issues. The thing walks through snow. Is comfortable to drive, even for a tall guy like me.  The new 4 runner's where just a little to off-road looking for us and the highlander gets better gas mileage.

You are us one year ago.

We went with the top model short of the hybrid drivetrain.  We love everything about it, and we would do it all over again.

Worst case is snowy winter interstate driving.

I gave a nod to our prior Subaru Forester for snow and ice, until I discovered the Highlander Snow/Ice mode button, which seems to lock the drivetrain up a little tighter and gave a more sure-footed feel.  Now I would say that they are par, and I'd put the Subaru Forester up at best in class.

But, I'm with jrebel.  If off-road was a constant need, I would go for the Four Runner versus the Highlander.  We have that covered, otherwise.

We have a 2018 Highlander. Same as 2017. My wife was dead set on a 4runner. She had driven them at the dealer and was ready to buy. I told her she should look at and drive a Highkander but she didn't like the way it looked. I told her more modern features and better ride so she relented and we went to drive one. She is very happy she drove the Highlander. We ordered and waited for an 18 because it was almost October and new model years would be coming out. So far almost 60k with no issues just routine maintenance. We got the Platinum Limited with all the stuff and are very happy. Onr of the things she likes is the 3rd row folds easy and you wouldn't even know it was there.

Yep.  The folding all the way to the front seat provides a cavernous cargo area.

I'm 6'4 and the 2nd row legroom is amazing. We've had 6 adults in ours with zero complaints.

My parents have a 2007 Highlander, we have a 2016.  Both have been great.  Zero issues with either.  Ours is the limited and the heated/AC seats are nice.  We have studded tires on for the winter and it cruises through snow/ice with no problems.  Great vehicles.

We have a 2017 SE and the wife loves it,,, no issues at all and it goes great in the snow too.  We have the second row captions seats and the kids (15 & 17) think they're very comfortable.

My wife has a 2012 Highlander hybrid and it has almost 150k on it so far zero issues.  She also wanted a 4runner until she drove the Highlander.
