65 and over antlerless tag 49 degrees
« on: June 14, 2021, 07:49:34 PM »
Looking for some help for a friend who drew the 65 and over antlerless moose tag in 49 degrees. Hes 74 now, Vietnam vet, a hell of a guy, and doesnt get around real well.  We plan on spending a couple weeks over there. Most of our hunting will be road hunting, any tips or pointers would be greatly appreciated.  Would be a hell of an honor to help him get a moose. Thanks in advance.  J

Good luck! I don't have a ton of experience in that area but from my limited time up there you shouldn't have an issue road hunting one up. Being he's a Vietnam Vet and an American hero, I bet a landowner would give you guys permission if asked. Good luck hope to see pictures this fall!

Thanks for the replies and PMs all. For anyone with a bull tag up there, PM me if you see this and want to share info...I have an uncanny ability to find animals that I/we cant shoot :chuckle: and I'd be happy to tell you where the big one is and my back and pack is yours. I love a good pack out. Thanks again. J

My buddy and I drew bull moose tags up in the Colville NF some years back and we took two nice bulls that year.  What that hunt taught me is the Moose hunting in Washington is an old mans hunt.  You can get in your truck and drive the roads until you find the bull you want to kill. Both bulls we got were less than 50 yards from the road.  If you and your friend are patient and just methodically drive the roads everyday you will see moose and he will get his bull. Good luck on your hunt.

I got a cow moose there several years ago.  I'll send you some info.  Love to help your friend.

I assume you want to shoot her close to a road. Winchester off flowery trail will net you a cow about every other pass.

Hopefully you guys set up a camp and at least make a weekend of it.   Drink some whiskey by a fire.  Share some stories.  Honestly it’s probably easier to find a cow moose standing in the middle of the road there then a ruffed grouse.  I hope he enjoys the hunt.

Not trying to be that guy but wanted to give my perspective for expectations.

Others have spoken about seeing moose all over consistently. Its not quite that way anymore. Not saying it can't be done but wanted to share some local knowledge. The moose have been taking a beating the last 5 years.

Hawks- I'll PM you. I have a few more areas to get on your radar.

Yeah, we gotta be near a rd.  He doesnt get around real well.  I'll have a bear and elk tag and he drew a cow tag for elk too (lucky guy).  We plan to setup for 10 days or so, maybe a little more.  It's amazing how something like a moose tag can change someone's spirits...dont think I've seen this much pep in my friends step since I met him. Certainly a blessing after an interesting year

Posting one more time before we head over. If anyone has a bull tag in 49 degrees during early october feel free to PM me and I'll be happy to share any we see. If anyone has anymore info or would like to PM us about any cow moose sightings, it would be much appreciated. Best of luck, be safe.
