At the 9:30 mark when the other elk are walking at us as we are following the blood trail I thought it was my bull following the cow, my heart sank. Then I realized it was six on the left and the cow was frozen looking right where the blood trail was headed. I was elated, dead bull. Started walking that direction and the blood trail took a hard right uphill. My heart sank again. We hit that huge pile of blood, I said " he has to be dead".

Micah had already seen him and was smiling. I was puzzled then it me, micah sees him. I frantically scanned the hillside and couldn't see him. I asked again and Micah just smiled then I saw him.

Fricking rollercoaster.

Still at work and kicking myself for not being in the woods. This is it. The 13th-15th is when the switch goes on in my area.  20 years of hunting there and 90% of the time it happens on one of those days and then just gets better.

I will be there the 16th and it will be game on.

I just described this to another member and I think this sums up my hunt.

People would probably puke at some of the huge bulls that presented easy shots with a gun and an even easier pack out but that is not what it is about for me.

I want the experience, I want long hard hikes, I want spoiled opportunities, I want it all to come together in the biggest hole there is on the mountain and have a brutal pack out of an amazing animal with my buddies complaining the entire time about "why didn't you shoot the 375" bull in the driveway the first weekend?".

It is that experience that I long for, the trophy on the wall will be a constant reminder of this amazing experience.  The inches of antler won't matter, they will be impressive I am sure but the experience that they will remind me of will be worth so much more.

Careful what you wish for.

This is pretty much exactly what I got out of this hunt. It is crazy how it all happened just like I hoped. Highs and lows and a brutal pack out.

A giant with a bow... what an accomplishment! Then you will get him back from the Taxidermist and get to re-play it every time you look at him. Congrats again!

Sick video!! Great animal and one heck of a frontal shot. I was fooled by that second bull following the cow. I was thinking hit him again!!  Thank you for sharing that great hunt
