6.5-300 Wby Mark V Barrel Length
« on: August 25, 2021, 08:19:01 PM »
I am able to get a good deal on a new Weatherby Mark V Ultra Lightweight with the #2 contour barrel in 6.5-300 Wby.

Trying to decide between the 26” and 28” barrels - instinct says go 28” for velocity but want to get everyone’s thoughts. Will be used for typical deer-sized animals at longer, but ethical ranges, as the caliber is intended for. Will not have the muzzle brake.

Thanks!

On the ultra light I would go 26” to preserve the intent of the ultralight idea. Neither answer is wrong. Looking at this set up as well for a future rifle.

My son has one. His barrel is 26" but with the muzzle brake screwed on it is 28" long.

Incidentally the best three shot group he has gotten so far is about 1 3/8"  :(

We have tried Weatherby factory 140 gr Accubond ammo as well as a bunch of handloads, it is a finicky rifle so far

Typical Weatherby the accuracy is there somewhere but you gotta work for it  :chuckle: I'd go 26 personally

I have mark v accumark with 28 inch barrel, all I have pushed through it is factory ammo so far but with exceptional accuracy.  127 gr barns grouped at .75” 140 gr burgers were the worst at 1.25” and the 130 swift scirocco II was the tightest group yet at .325 inches. All were 3 shot groups repeated 3 times and three bullies grouped about the same each time
I don't always shoot big mule deer, but when I do, it's with a bow tech!

I believe those Weatherby's with 28's are only 28 because you're including the muzzle brake.  I've never seen a factory Weatherby that had 28in tube less, muzzle brake.

I’m running a 28” with a 1-8.5 twist on mine.
