Another interesting tidbit I forgot to mention: I knew he was in the neighborhood. But I was surprised to see him in daylight (this was like 11AM) this early in October.

Nice shot. As you drew back, did the buck sense you and stop? Or did the rain you mentioned and his focus on the doe mask any sound from the draw?

I think he tensed a bit but never looked at me. It happened very fast as you can imagine. I had a steady wind in my face and decent rain noise, which is the only reason the whole situation could've unfolded the way it did.
