WY unit 1 antelope
« on: October 02, 2023, 05:30:55 PM »
Day 1:

My wife and I crossed the Montana-Wyoming boarder at 1pm and immediately went to hunting for speed goats in unit 1. On our way through private properties we saw several whitetail and mule deer. It was good to see them around.

We hunted for the next three hours and only saw 5 antelope, all on private. Two of those were bucks, one small and then one that looked to be a shooter bedded on the other side of state land on a hill 900+yds Way on private. I busted out the spotter and from what I could see, he’s worth keeping an eye on tomorrow. A disappointing day as far as numbers go, but at least there’s a shooter in the area.

Supposed to rain 1000-1200 tomorrow. Not sure how that’s going to affect the goats. Hight winds on Thursday, so that might suck for shooting. Sunny and warm on Friday.

I’ll check in with all of you tomorrow.

Well go for a blue chip unit, not unit 1.

Day 2:

Brutal hunting today. 12 bucks, 10 which were shooters…all on private. Counted 6 rigs hunting the same area as me. Rained all day. Rain here is not like at home, but still it rained.

Got the wife on a nice buck at first light. He was on private, and 200yds from and moving towards state land. He made an appearance on state land, but quickly disappeared. We went after him and relocated the heard but now he was chasing a doe and they would not stop for a shot. That’s the last we saw of him as they disappeared. We had no problem finding bucks the rest of the day, but like I said, all on private or there was a hunter in the area so I would keep moving past.

Back at it tomorrow🤞

Good luck. Unit 1 can be tough due to all the private lands.

Look forward to reading more of your adventure.

Day 3:
My wife and I started the day out as we did the previous, up at 0500 and in the truck at 0600 for the 30min drive to the hunt area. This was a good morning, a crisp 40° and clear…hunting weather.

We get to the hunt area at 0630, barely able to glass. We didn’t see any antelope at a piece of state land like the day prior, so we continue on. We see a lot of whitetail and mule deer, but no goats. We came upon a piece of BLM land to glass and we don’t see goats, but “elk!” I’ve never seen elk in this are, but here is a herd of 20. Two spikes apart from a 5x5 bull and his cows.

…We continue on after my wife gets her fill of glassing the elk and hearing a bull bugle for the first time in her life. We glass several more pieces of public and no goats. Actually only a few goats on private land. We both realized and noticed we had nit seen another hunter yet. This day was seeming weird and special all at the same time.   At 0800 we backtrack to a large piece of BLM we had stopped and glassed a heard of mule deer about 20min prior. As we created the hill on this dirt road in the middle of nowhere, there they are, not the mule deer, but a bachelor herd of four antelope bucks. I stop and tell the wife, “we’re going to kill them”.

I stop and pull over at the top of the hill out of sight of the bucks who were lower in the middle of the field. We put a plan together and tell the wife how we’re going to cross the barbed wire and make our stalk from an elevated firing position.

We get out of the truck, get our gear, and head towards the fence. We crawl under the barbed wire fence, and then low crawl to the edge of the hill until we can barely see the goats.

I range them at 300 yards and pick out the biggest one and tell my wife that’s the one she’s gonna shoot. I also pick one out and ask her if she needs me to back her up or if we can shoot simultaneously and fill both our tags. This would be the first hunt where I am not looking over her shoulder, telling her what to do. Oh I did. Is it just her parallax and elevation turret

We both get set up on our respective coats in the sitting position. I ask her if she’s on hers as she says she is. I get on mine and I tell her, “whenever you’re ready”. I hear the report from her rifle and then press my trigger with the crosshairs on the front shoulder of my buck as he faces left to right. I see both bucks spin in a circle wobble and fall over. Two bucks, simultaneous shots at 300yds. We were so excited that we shared the awesome experience of harvesting antelope bucks at the same time. This was my wife’s first ever antelope. An experience and memory for us that we will never forget.

Pics from our firing position at top of hill. You can see our bucks to left of pond. The other two bucks standing to the left wondering what happened.

Wife’s buck has the cool heart shaped horns and is bigger. I have a big goat at home, I wanted to make this hunt special for her so she got the biggest goat.
