That's a great question!

From what I've heard the state politics in Michigan have gone pretty wacky, so that might be a factor.Why would it not surprise me if the same thing happened here?

Seems every week we hear of another bear attack, another cougar attack, another wolf attack. But they always say the same thing. This is very rare and it never happens. But seems to be becoming more and more normal to hear. And it is a complete joke that there was a warning in regards to such action.

Seems to me that we can expect more of it before it gets better. 1996 they made killing cougar bears harder, by 2010 wolves started moving in and picking the best locations. Those wolves moved throughout the state and wiped out the bigger more congregated herds of both deer and elk. Now you have a bunch of hungry toothy critters looking for food. Deer, Elk and Moose have found that the only place they can get a decent nights sleep and some vittles is in someones back yard. The toothy critters have no choice but to go after livestock or slink into the neighborhoods under the cover of darkness to get a bite or two. A perfect recipe for disaster and whether the state officials are willing to own it or not, absolutely foreseeable. This state had multiple herds of deer, and Elk around the state that had great numbers. What did they think was going to happen when the predator numbers were at an all time high and the prey had been decimated? Oh, and by all means bring in a few Grizzly bears and add them to your already severely upside down eco system. Darn, now I want to move!

Maybe it was a warning to shoot faster or die?

So they can say they did something, instead of nothing, and the decision is harder to question later.

I think it is similar to leaving somebody $1 in your will. If you leave nothing, they can sue the estate for what they feel they were owed because you forgot them. If you leave $1, its a signal that you intentionally left them out.

I’m not a wolf defender by any means, but I’d say they probably settled into the prime deer and elk habitats out of necessity.

The leading natural cause of death for wolves is other wolves. Smith says protected wolves in Yellowstone still have a 20% mortality rate because they are fiercely territorial.
