Blinds Tip & Tricks
« on: July 20, 2024, 12:39:58 PM »
Lots of folks hunt out of blinds. Got any tips or tricks to pass on.

I killed a spike elk  some years ago out of my pop up blind with a muzzy. Darn near burnt the blind down.

Just like my wall tents I pull my blinds out every summer and do any repairs and clean out the carry bags. Had two rods come loose during turkey so glued those back in.

Got some wear on the outside corners. Any idea how to address this issue?

Thinking Bish's Tear Meander might work.

Restocked the blind carry bags. Tie down strings, gallon zip locks for peeing, garbage bags, small hatchet, electric tape or gorilla tape for emergency repairs.

Dollar store screw drivers for stakes, anti scent spray.

We hunt out of ground blinds for deer and turkey, they are great.  My advice would be:

1.  Make sure your blind is big enough to be comfortable and allow for gear, tripod, multiple people, etc.
2.  Tall enough to stand up in so you can stretch your legs on the long sits.
3.  A comfy chair that does not make noise.  The cheap blind chairs suck and you will not stay in the blind if you have garbage to sit on.
4.  Get your blind in at least a week before the season so the animals can become accustom to it.

We use Barronet blinds and I love them.

We were sitting on a ridge on my son's second year of hunting.  I knew the bear were crossing a saddle to get to the only water in the area.  We sat in the blind watching the saddle....knowing the blind would hide my young son's movements.  Mid afternoon we hear the brush behind the blind rustling and I thought we had a deer moving in.  I motion to my son to sit real still.  A few moments later, a young bear poked his head up and was literally within inches of the blind......the bears body and my right arm were less than a foot apart and only separted by the fabric.  My son ended up shooting that bear at about 15 feet.   :chuckle: :chuckle:

Blinds work.

A couple things that I’ve learned about ground blinds:

Set them up against a dark background.  You don’t want to be a dark silhouette against a light background.
For the same reason, keep the inside as dark as you can.
Same goes for you, don’t wear camo.  Wear black, think ninja.  You are a shadow in a shadow.
Stay warm and comfortable, you need to be in there for a while.
Noise proof everything in the blind.  Nothing bangs, beeps, crinkles or rattles.
