Taneum muzzleloader cow tag
« on: July 29, 2024, 10:22:15 AM »
My hunting buddy drew the Taneum muzzleloader cow tag. Third choice tag as we have never hunted this unit and just added it on a whim. He is 78 and handicapped so walking will be limited. I am his designated shooter, packer, and general grunt laborer so we don't need to shoot it right off the road but will need to be close (1/2 mile or lessdepending on terrain). We spent the last weekend driving the unit. It appeared that the S.E. corner area up Taneum creek will be our best spot. We did drive from the Stampede pass turn all the way out to Blazed Ridge. That looked steep and really overgrown with reprod. My question is are we more or less on the right track sticking to that S.E. area? Does this unit get a lot of Muzzleloader pressure? I've read most of the posts here on that unit but some were 10+ years old and conditions change. Any new info or insight would be appreciated.

tluns,   yeah I drew the same tag this year.  I am starting my scouting in August. If you are interested in sharing any info or intel on the unit I would be glad to connect and with you and stay informed both before the season and while we are hunting the unit. From what Ive seen the S.E. end of the unit is probably where I am going to focus as well.  I do not know what pressure it gets during the MZ season. I have some other ideas also that I want to look at when I am out there.  Hey, if you want a point of contact and another set of eyes out there, send me a PM.

Well, my info is at least 10 years too so take it for what it’s worth.

Yes, it gets a lot of pressure.  Lots of road hunters, ORV riders, berry pickers, etc.  The place changes over night as the hunters move.  If you scout it preseason and find elk, don’t be surprised if tents pop up right where the elk were the day before.

And, naturally, the animals move to the deep, dark nasty spots to get away from the madness.  My advice is to find a spot to post up and let the animals come to you as the other hunters push them.  Less walking that way and it should increase your chances.

Sorry, that’s not much help, but it’s all I got.  Good luck.
