« on: October 15, 2009, 05:34:45 AM »
Hey guys i have a winchester model 70 300 win mag. I went to make sure she was sighted in the other day and it just doesnt seem to be putting out the groups. im shooting remington core-lokt 180 grain bullets. Yes the gun is clean. Does anybody have any advice on what ammo would be a good try or any other reccomendations? thanks.

with factory ammo you just gotta find one that works. it can get expensive if you have a picky gun. try some of those federal fusions, they load barnes bullts and ive had good luck in my dads rifle with them. of course i dont shoot factory ammo any more, reloading is the only way to go if you want real accuracy  :twocents:

With my remmy 700bdl, I always had great accuracy with 180gr core lokts.  But with my Ruger 77 all weather in 300winny, it didn't shoot core lokts very well.  It did shoot Winchester spupremes loaded with the Winchester version of the Barnes X bullet that is no longer made, can't remember the name, shot those real well though.  Probably since '94 I have been running nothing but handloads through both those guns as well as my 25-06 all shooting swift scirocco's.  My 325wsm just loves the Winchester supremes loaded with the Accubonds.  If reloading powders would allow me to duplicate factory ballistics with my WSM, I would be handloading for it as well.

If your sticking with factory ammo, you'll just have to buy a couple different boxes and find which one your rifle likes to eat best.  Try the remington safari grades for your 300 loaded with the swift scirocco.
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.

is this a new problem? as in...did you shoot this gun fine last year? different ammo? what kind of groups are you shooting wit the core-lokts?

I'd try Winchester factory ammo with power point bullets.  They are not very expensive and the power point bullets hold together ok..........at least as well as cor-lokts.
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

Might give the Federal Classic ammo a try. I have had the best luck with them when I have a need for factory ammo. Its the stuff in the blue box.

My wifes 6.5x55 mauser in the short barrelled carbine form absolutely devours those bullets.  Can't believe she can shoot the groups she does with that gun and somewhat crappy old military trigger.  They shoot so good out of her gun that the reloading die I bought for the gun sits unopened, just no reason to reload for it.

I was out shooting mine (savage model 110) with the same 180 core locks and my groups were pitiful at best- about 2 inches to either side and up. The elevation stayed between 1 and 2 inches high. This was at 116yds.I didn't adjust my scope at all yet because I got the goods to reload and I want the brass. I am new to reloading and have yet to find the load for the gun.

like the guys have said try diffrent ammo with factory loads thats what it takes to find a great shooting ammo in your gun lots of guns shoot good with the rems but some hate them and won't shoot worth $hit also check your basics if the gun is just starting to do this your bases rings etc if you just started shooting it definanly might be those loads in that gun

It's unfortunately true, some guns just like certain types/brands/weights of ammo. My Mauser only likes 180 grain bullets and that's all that it will group. Tight groups! but try another weight of bullet and it turns into a shotgun.

Just have to find that sweet round. Unfortunately now-adays that translates directly into $$$. Of course my $198 rifle would only settle for Federal Premium rounds, right? So much for saving a few bucks on a "cheap" '06.  :chuckle: I love it though once I found the right round.

Good luck !
