Remington 700 SPS w/ Nikon 3-9x40  or Smith & Wesson 629, 8 3/8" which weighs nearly as much but makes jungle hunting blacktails easier.

Bowtech Destroyer- see signature.

But I did just pick up a Kimber 84m in .308 with a Leupold vx3 3-9x40. Weighs almost exactly 6 lbs total without sling. Feels like a toy almost it's so light. And I'm surprised and quite happy with the accuracy as well.

probably the lightest rifle I have is my marlin xl7 stainless topped with a leupold 3x9 that I had the custom shop put their fine crosshair reticle in.  My problem is know matter the hunt I always chicken out at the last second and grab old betsy out of the safe, Browning BLR in 30-06 with the same scope as above.  I love that rifle more than my children :chuckle:

My friend packs a 700 sendero 7 RUM with Seekins rings/base and vortex Razord HD...   I pack my semi custom Rem 700la .280 AI with M24 contour  :yike: heavy fluted barrel with the vortex viper PST with Seekins rings/base and harris bipod...  12.5 lbs unloaded and yes I do pack this thing... not willingley, but I do.   :bash:

Next gun is going to be either a 300 ultra or a 300 Norma.  #4 contour with a 24" barrel shoulder be able to get me under 10 lbs total for rifle.

If you can afford it go with the Kimber 84m Montana...I can't so I carry the Savage Lightweight hunter in 7mm-08. My 9 year old son carries the new (last year shot show edition) browning micro-midas in 7mm-08 (he is a lefty and this was the only model I could find...hence why I can't afford the kimber...) we both have Leupold glass sitting on top of them (yes, my 9 year old has a $800 rifle and a $400 scope...buy cheap, buy twice...plus again, the darn kid is a lefty...not much selection with quality there).

G-C-R

PS. If your gonna get serious about a backcountry rifle, get into reloading...my 7mm-08 is a tack driver and is pushing the 139 grn Hornay GMX almost 3,000 fps...with a 20" barell
There's more to life than hunting...there's fishing too!
