Turkey Tips for a newbie?
« on: April 15, 2012, 02:54:07 PM »
Taking the family to Colville area next weekend. Just looking for some pointers. I know the general things like roosting in the evening and setting up in the morning. My questions are things like...

How long do you hunt in morning?

When do you go back out for the afternoon?

Do you hunt til dark?

I know there is no exact here, just trying to get a feel for the rules of thumb so I'm not waisting time and energy.

Thanks

Can't shoot them if you are not in the "field".  I've shot them at just about every hour from dawn to dusk.  We missed a couple at first light and got mine at 10.  Shot one SE of Colville at about 2 while "scouting' for the next day.  Shot one two years ago near Spokane that was about five seconds from flying up to a roost, he was all by himself.

Good luck!

I'm normally in the woods well before daylight and come back to camp for lunch for  bout 2hours then come back to camp after I have hopefully put birds to bed. We have shot gobblers at first light mid morning in the afternoon and right before roosting time. Its an all day event.

Thanks guy's. I will be out as long as my little boys can handle it then. And when they get tired I'll drop them off with mom and head back out.

Be sure to thank "Mom" for that!

She is gung ho for sure. She called me today on my way in to work to tell me she was thinking of turkeys. She is more excited just about camping I'm sure, but she knows I'm excited about turkeys show she is pumped about both. She will be right with us until the boys loose steam. So let's see here... a wife, a 3 yr old and a 7 yr old and a rookie. That's gonna go well. lol. I need some luck I think.

Best way to get into birds is after dark with a flashlight and burlap sack.  :chuckle: You'll have fun thats for sure, the kids will be pumped after hearing their first gobble.
Shut up and Hunt!
