Enclosed utility trailer for hunt camp
« on: July 27, 2015, 05:32:23 AM »
Any body use one? Thinking about a 12-14ft to double as a atv hauler/ portable hunt cabin.
Needs to have some ground clearance to travel crappy roads. Will add some windows and fold down beds and shelving. Any recommendations on brands to look for? Ones that will hold up on rough roads?
I remember seeing someone on here with one, but don't remember when/where.
Thanks

We use one to haul our gear to the woods. We set our tents up nearby, and have a mini kitchen in the cargomate. We rely on the cargo mate to hide in if extremely windy at chow time.

How does it do towing on dirt/rock roads?

I don't take mine "off road". if that is your vision I would say they are not what you need. dirt roads fine, pot holes suck, they are designed for highway use. if you really want that capability, look into a DRMO army surplus item and modify to enclose? big tires, suspension, maybe then... I load my tandem axle every season, tow dirt roads... ground clearance Is were I draw the line if your scraping, you are tearing it up!

Two guys in our camp have them. They haul their bike or quad in them. Unload and turn it into their little cabin. One guy bought one used from a cabinet maker that had a full working mini kitchen in it. He likes it alot.

But they complain about  the quarlity of roads we run on. I have gotten them a couple not so good roads before. One of being the Cleman Ridge Road a mile up. Rough as a cob. On any rig. But he went slow no problem.

But he asks me about what the roads will be like every year.

My buddy had an enclosed snowmobile trailer we used for elk camp several times and it worked just fine.  He had it set-up so we could prop the front door open about a foot and run a 4" chimney pipe out of it so we could have a small wood stove in it.  He had a piece of metal cut for the top of the open door and triangle pieces of plywood cut to seal up the sides of the open door.  We would sleep 4 guys in it for a week.  Definitely not as nice as the travel trailer we use now, but it worked. As far as ground clearance goes get one that has the entire deck above the tires, like the one below, and you don't have to worry about scraping bottom on less than perfect roads.

I have one that has windows and the walls and ceiling are insulated that I have used for hunting and camping..  It is larger than what you are looking for (8.5x15 with 6" extra height) but worked good.. We just used a buddy heater to heat it with carbon monoxide detector and did well.  We recently bought a travel trailer so most likely am going to have to sell this but really wish I could keep it around since it works good..  It doesn't do very good on real rough roads though.  Type in "enclosed trailer conversion" into google images and you will have a lot of good ideas..

Chris,
You can buy one already setup for hunting/ATV hauling. I bought a new cargo trailer last year from the outfit in Moses Lake. I wasn't very happy with the quality of their brand they sell, I got $500 from them because of it. I'd go to Trailers Plus in Post Fall. Good place, even though they're a little far for you.

Nice setup!

I've been considering buying a trailer semi-setup already vs one brand new and customize to my taste.

Thanks to all, some good looking set ups there. Thinking I am going to go this route, I have towed a 95 tent trailer with little teeny wheels on some really crappy roads, it has held up so far so thinking an enclosed can handle it(just gotta take it slow)

Put 10 ply tires on it. Mine came with 6 ply tires.

Well I purchased a 7x14 Charmac, and have been working hard at getting it converted to dual purpose.
Side bed & dining table fold up tight to the wall, 2 bunk style beds across the back that store up against the roof.  Insulation, roofing, battery & wiring, lights, vent, coat rack all done.
Still to come, linoleum, more overhead cabinets, window(s), leaf over axle, stereo, propane line, and maybe a
