Backcountry Shirt
«
on:
June 24, 2012, 12:20:32 AM »
I've got the base layers down and I've got the outer layers covered, but what do you wear in between? When I'm hunting in a front-country setting I usually wear cotton chamois/flannel shirts, but I don't want to carry any cotton into the backcountry. I was thinking of maybe a wool shirt (something like
this
or
this
), but I also notice that Sitka/Kuiu don't really carry 'shirts'? What do you wear?

I don't often wear a mid shirt unless the weather is getting nasty. Sitka Traverse T would probably be the closest thing to a mid-layer shirt that I use until temperatures drop below freezing during the day. Then I switch to wool. But that comes at a cost as I then have to wear larger outer wear to keep my mobility.
I find that I use a vest more than anything in the back country between my base layer
(core-t)
and outer layers
(usually Ascent Jacket)
. Warms your core and blocks wind when needed without the weight and bulk in your pack. Plus it is easy to get on and off when your doing a lot of stop and go. As a fat *censored* I know a lot about stop and go hiking/climbing
I find I have begun using only the Core-T and 90% jacket more and more during late fall hunts instead of the Core-T, Traverse-T and Ascent jacket. Again, one less thing to take on and off and less weight in the pack when I'm getting over heated. The extra large pit zips really make it a great back country item as it stays out of the pack more and covers a wider range of conditions than the Ascent. Much better than the Ascent on those damp misty mornings too. When I stop to glass on a windy day I'm now putting the vest on over the 90% jacket rather than wearing it as a mid layer.

I've been wearing this washable wool whipcord shirt for about eight years. It's great because it wears like iron, and keeps me warms when it's cold but doesn't immediately make me sweat if the temperature turns warmer.
I see Cabela's says they are "sold out".
Not sure if they will be replacing them or not. Seems like every time I find a really good piece of equipment, by the time I need a replacement, they are out of stock or not made anymore.

I wear a pendleton button down wool shirt. Its a fleck green color with suede elbow patches. I think its called.the outdoorsman. Not to light or heavy 11 oz wool, and silent. The boy scouts have heavier shirt jack in red or green at a bargain price, $70; 18 oz wool i believe.

I like poly over wool..., like zipper pockets to keep from losing stuff. Extra pockets are also good. A vented back and pits is nice. I have a couple of cabelas hunting shirts in orange and camo, nice to be able to lose your jacket and remain legal depending on the pursuit.

Second or third on the traverse shirt, then always a down GO-lite jacket just in case it really starts to drop temps. Stuffs great and weighs nothing, a lot of guys are down on down, but with a good set of rain gear I've had no problem losing warmth or loft and I live on the wetside.

Kryptek Alaios.
They also have a new shirt coming out that may fit the bill for a mid layer.

Thanks for all the replies - lots of good info to go on here. I will probably go with a used Pendleton or one of either the Traverse or the Kryptek.
arguhl, I did pick up a Cloudveil down jacket this offseason which is exactly as you mentioned, light and packable. And as long as it stays under the waterproof layers I'll be in good shape.

I use a Filson Jac-shirt or a thick fleece like the Mountian Hardwear Monkey Man jacket. Good luck!

I wear a Kuiu spindrift or Kuiu vest as main middle layers. I also have a Sitka Traverse 1/4 zip that I take. If it is super cold, I will double up with 250 kuiu base over 185 kuiu base. Firstlite is making a merino button shirt this year that looks interesting.

Look for anything with Merino wool. You will stay warm and it drys super quick.
