storing supplies/gear in the wilderness for future use
« on: July 05, 2012, 12:30:04 AM »
i was thinking about packing in some supplies to my hunting area during scouting or a couple weeks before hunting season. Like water, MRE's/Mtn House or other non perishable food items. Maybe even other gear?  i know jugs of water would be fine in wet weather along with certain food items that wont get damaged by rain. ive never had MRE's or mtn house but i assume that they are water proof.. does anyone else do this?  :dunno:

Outside of private land I don't know where this is legal.

Sounds like the key is not getting caught.
The only man who never makes a mistake, is the man who never does anything!!
The further one goes into the wilderness, the greater the attraction of its lonely freedom.

i hunt a place that i do just that, iuse big totes and bury them in the ground i then put i big stick in the tote sideways to keep it from collapsing and deforming i then bury it put plastic over the top and then cover that with dirt and leaves, i make it look like noone was ever there, at the end of the huntn season i bring it all out and fill the holes back in, i think it really upsets the timber companies when people leave a fricken disaster in their wake, which also pisses me off to no end. i always leave the woods woth more than what i came in with.... mre's are very good especially the ones they have out now days, when i was in in the late 80s and early 90s ya didnt have alot to choose from but they were still pretty tasty, well i should say its an aquired taste, one built up over time, forget about taken a dump after a couple days though, and then after a few days when your body does decided to offload you will know what given birth feels like  :chuckle:  :chuckle:

Don't get caught.   8) I have heard about it being done with success.  The key is to make it invisible.  When the season is over make sure it all comes out.

This is called caching. It's illegal on public lands, too many people have cluttered the countryside with gear they never retrieve.

..on one of my Alaska trips my Pilot put me in near a small lake.  I spotted a flag pole and a couple 55gal drums.  He said a local family had been guiding for 30+years in the area and that the cache was illegal (inside ANWR) but it was only a few barrels....

In my wanderings over the next 16 days I counted 25, plus 16 Coleman stoves, 12+ 5gal empty cans of Blazo, boat parts, carts, gear for 5 wall tents, folding metal chairs and tables...and more all shoved under the skinny spruce trees.

The next year he's talking to a guy while I load up. The guy wanders off and my pilot tells me he's from the guide family.  The Game Dept yanked their license to guide after spotting some of the cache.  My pilot laughed and said they'ed be out in a couple flights..5-6 barrels..  I told him of all I saw,  :yike: :yike:

It's also where I learned not to stir my trash fire with old caribou antlers... :bdid:

I think you can do this on FS land if you check on the stuff every 24 hours.

 :yeah:

Dude you're going to pack water in?  :chuckle: You pack beer in first dont ya?

I have to say i 've thought about doing this as well. It would be nice to pack in a stove, lantern, cooking gear
maybe a small range tent w/collapsable stove. Its very tempting. The $5000.00 fine tho is a good deterrent. :'(

i have been doing it for 4 years now, all the same place. i had no idea it was against the law.   :dunno:
i have already made my first trip back this year. well i hope i don't get caught, i may move it all this year.
i use 5 gallon food grade buckets with the screw on lids you can get at cheaper then dirt. i had one of the old lids chewed on the first year. i can just show up and i will have enough for 5 days at this point including shelter and sleeping bag. packing water is insane...buy a filter.
