Went hiking today and saw on the backcountry permit that you can cache items for 48 hours

most wilderness in WA is "leave no trace"I havent seen it but might the fine print state that leaving no trace implies that it is untraceable to game wardens, hippies, animals, forest service officials, other hunters, and looters who might detect it above ground?  I mean, if we pack out our poo like we are supposed to, should we not take our camp stove fuel, food, and meat next to it in the same pack?

Well being illegal I couldn't possibly tell you to just use a 4" PVC pipe that is capped at both ends. One end being screwed on like a threaded cap on one end.  :dunno: (makes it water proof). if it wasn't illegal that is.  :chuckle:

Just have a few inches of fuse running out of that pipe and nobody will touch it.  Rangers will be pissed off after they've had to sit on it forever waiting for a bomb guy to get up there.

I have used 5 gallon buckets in the past, hung from a sturdy branch with no problems.

If this is illegal, wouldn't geocaching fall under the same guidelines?

The last time we packed in our stuff above Chelan, buried it completely in a steel barrel, then covered with 2 feet of dirt and rocks, a bear got into it and ate everything including toilet paper and batteries.   :bash:

That it does in a designated Wilderness area.

Wife here,
Here is something else to think about when deciding if you want to store stuff in the wilderness.  You have to think that if you have picked a nice spot that someone else might come by and think that is a nice spot as well.  We packed into a spot a while back a few days before season opened.  Had camp all set and ready.  Evening before season opened a guy came into camp and claimed it all.  All his stuff was buried.  We had no idea anyone would even be in the area.  He was somewhat nice, but the next day was different when the hunting buddies showed up.  I can say from a girls perspective it was a very tense situation when we came back into camp after hunting all day.  The guy confronted us for stealing his camp sight, like he owned the woods.  Pretty scary when you consider all of us were holding guns.  We kept our heads and went into our tent and left him outside.  So just another thought when considering leaving items in the woods, you might find someone in "your" spot and have to be prepared to move or share the spot.

We were forced to share "our" spot with the guy as he already had his tarp set up when we got back from hunting.  He chose to set it up directly at the front of our tent.  :yike: So needless to say in the middle of the night when nature calls he got both of us walking through his tarp tent.  We also learned that these guys leave all their stuff there ALL year long and have for years.  They have stoves, coolers, dishes, etc.  All buried so you wouldn't even know that it was there.
