Skykomish River pointers

Does anyone have any pointers for this river?  Or willing to fish with my son and I on Monday?

Skykomish River opens for hatchery chinook salmon

Action: Open retention of hatchery chinook salmon on the Skykomish River.

Effective date: July 14 through Aug.15, 2012.

Species affected: Hatchery chinook salmon

Location: The Skykomish River from the mouth upstream to the mouth of the Wallace River.

Reason for action: Early returns to the Wallace River Hatchery indicate that the hatchery run size is stronger than forecasted and that broodstock collection goals can be met even with a Skykomish River Fishery.

Other information: Skykomish River, From the Mouth to the Lewis Street Bridge in Monroe, daily limit 2 hatchery chinook, minimum size 12 inches in length. Starting August 1, night closure and anti-snagging rules in effect. Skykomish River, From the Lewis Street Bridge in Monroe to the Wallace River, daily limit 2 hatchery chinook, minimum size 12 inches in length. Night closure and anti-snagging rules in effect. Trout and other game fish are open as listed in 2012-13 Sport Fishing Rules.

Look for rollers. Eggs, or shrimp. They can be tough at times. If you find fish and they are not biting use every presentation you know.
I found a pod of fish one time and floated eggs thru to no avail. Grabbed the drift rod and ran eggs thru to no avail. Grabbed the boondoggin rod and boondogged eggs to no avail. At this point I was scratching my head so I grabbed my drift rod again put a big chunk of lead on ran up river, positioned the boat on top of the fish and casted up stream and drug it through them. Hooked 5 fish in 5 passes. My point is they can be finicky. Look for them at the head of holes also.

I plan on bringing eggs, dick nites, and sandshrimp but I have no idea what Im doing.

At this level the water is still running hard and fast. Concentrate on the slower shallow water tight to the bank and On the inside corners where the river turns. The bonus about the water being high like this is you have a good chance of catching steelhead and kings in the same spots.

Is there a hatchery they get stuck on or a confluence of another river into the Skykomish that would be a good start?

They are going to the Wallace river hatchery. The mouth is accessible (or used to be, haven't been there in many moons.)

Are you going in a boat or from shore?
The mouth of the Wallace is still accessible but it has changed for the worse as far as being a good place to fish. The fish have to pass there en route to the hatchery so there is always a chance you hit it right.
The water on the Duvall side of the Lewis street bridge can be good for intercepting a fish that are on the move.
Cracker bar across from the mouth of the Sultan river can be good for kings......fish the slower water lower in the hole for the kings and the faster water at the head of the hole for steelhead.
Might hit the water for a couple hours one day this weekend with my boys. Kings are all I have caught in the few trips I have hit the river this year. Hope there are still a few hangin where they were a few weeks ago....water level should be about the same as it was when I was hitting them.

Don't leave anything in your car, especially at the mouth of the wallace.  The tweaker problem is pretty serious around there.

Too bad you dont have boat.  Another area to try is at the mouth of the Snoqualmie river where it dumps into Sky.  Lots of guys put boats in at High Bridge road (launch is below the bridge) and access that part of the Sky below the Lewis Street bridge in Monroe.
