Savage Model 42 .410/22WMR

I couldn't decide between the 24 and the semi auto JC Higgins.  Both were $35.00 I think 1974 or '75.  But when the Western Auto clerk offered to throw in 1,000 rounds of .22 and 100 rounds of .410 I went with the 24.  I had to split and stack a hell of a bunch of firewood to pay my dad back for that.  I think he got the best deal   That gun has sure taken a bunch of birds and critters over the years.

I prefer my 24. Soldered barrels with wood, only way to go.

I'm glad to see them trying, but that is a funny looking gun. 

Like everyone else, I'm glad I got my hands on an original model 24 in 30-30/20 gauge. I bought it for my dad so that he would start hunting with me again. It worked for a year until my folks were in a car wreck. He doesn't hunt any more, but that gun will always be here in case their situation changes. It's one of a very small number I guns which I won't sell.

Hmmm...cute--But I'll just keep the model 24 that I paid $35 for. 

Got me beat, I paid $50 for mine about 10 years ago!

Thats a good buy.  I love the 24 and have a few myself.  From what I saw they were going for $150-$250 just 6-7 years ago.  All of a sudden the prices on them is through the roof!!  They're marked $350-$450 at the gun shows and on line now.  Ridiculous.

X2.  The new one is ugly.  But if they come out with an interesting caliber/gauge combo I stil may have to try one out.

I had a 24 in 223/20ga and it was a nice accurate rifle but was cumbersome to cock with a scope mounted low enough to use and the selector on the hammer was kind of a pain to use.  I started looking around and there are a lot of nice combo guns out there and some can be very reasonable for a high quuality European made rig.

I sold off the Sav. 24 and picked up a nice Bernadelli 12ga/5.6x50R Mag (222 Rem. Mag rimmed would be close), set trigger on the rifle and very nice looking.  As you can see by my avatar it works.

I heard at Sportsmans Wareshouse that they were going to market them at $389, I believe. They still do not have them on the racks yet.
