So, I have 3 rifles suitable for deer/elk, and I have two sons tht hunt with me. But, one of my rifles is down for the count (shipped back to Browning yesterday).

That leaves me down 1 rifle, so I need to buy 1.

I'm not rolling in dough., and not destitute.

Savage 111 with BDC 3X9 scope combo for under $500 seems like the best deal out there.

Why not? got any better suggestions in the $500 - $800 range?

Just a heads up, seeing these at the gun range and helping people sight them in, I have seen the scopes lose the crosshairs or just not adjust anymore and they were band new. In your other post you mention the 7mm and 300 win mag........the scopes might not handle the recoil of these. Again just a word of caution....they might work great for you. I have to say I have a couple of Savages.

The Savage rifles are great but the fish-bonker grade Bushnells that they use in their packages are cheap glass at best! I had one of these scopes on a package rifle and it failed within a couple of trips to the range. I know other guys that have them and have no complaints but none that put as many rounds through their rifles as I do.

The rifles he's talking about are topped with Nikon scopes... I agree, I had a couple of the Bushnells on my Savages. Waste of glass...

Hopefully the Nikons work better than the P-series mounts I recently bought and returned... But the Model 11/111 looks to be a decent rifle. I love all my Savages...

That is great! I was just looking through some of their models and saw a Weaver scope on another, have they ditched the fish-bonkers?

NVM, I just saw that they are still using the fish-bonkers on some of their rifles.

Which Nikon scope is on the package deal? I always think of the package deals as having scopes that you end up throwing away, but maybe the Nikon scope situation is different?

One package has a BDC. Another package ($120 more, if I recall) has a Nikon.

One guy I trust says the BDC is not a throw away scope......

Get the package deal then and just sell the scope someday to upgrade to a better one if necessary.

The "BDC" is Bullet Drop Compensation, Nikon's Prostaff on the Savages. Nikon's lower end scope, but I expect much better than the Bushnells.

The "Hunter XP" series has the Bushnell Scopes, the "Trophy Hunter XP" series sport the Nikons.

My experience is the BDC scopes are too generic in their marks......get one of the plex scopes that the after market guys like Kenton Industries make turrets for. On their web page they list scopes they make turrets for.

Wasn't there a guy selling a savage 110 in .270 caliber on here for a reasonable price??? If so that is the gun I would buy.

I think that you'd be pretty happy with the set up. The scopes aren't top end, but they're very functional. I have a couple of Nikon Prostaff scope which I've pulled off of package rifles, and they've all worked well for me. I use them as loaners when guys need a scope on short notice. I ran one on my 375 Ruger just to see how it would hold up. I hit about 120 rounds before I decided I had tortured it enough. It never failed and it still tracks and holds zero perfectly.

Another option is to buy a Stevens Model 200. It's the same gun as a Savage 111, but without the Accutrigger. You can find the Stevens for around $350 most of the time. Then you can take the money you saved and pick up some better glass if that is a concern.

I don't think you can do much better than a Savage for an entry level hunting rifle. In fact I'd run some of my budget Savages up against stuff which cost twice as much. And I do quite often! Just understand that the fit and finish leave a lot to be desired some times. If that doesn't bug you, then you're good!

But you can buy a sweet aftermarket boyd stock for $100. If you find a stevens for the right price don't be affraid to pick it up and replace the stock. They you have a pretty sweet gun for the money. And a shooter to boot.....

I actually like the Stevens stocks. They are extremely light weight (23oz) and practically disposable. I'd that's what I used when I did my first action bedding job. If i messed it up, i was only out like $30! They make terrible target stocks though!

I just picked one up tonight in 7MM Rem Mag. Kind of happy. I haven't ought a rifle in a LONG time. It will be fun to go sight in.

$480 with the Nikon BDC scope at Wholesale sports. Seems like a good deal to me. Please don't post a better deal........ I'm feeling good.....

I bought my wife the Weatherby Vanguard combo (30-06) when it 1st came out for $200. I think there more now but, its the smoothest shooting rifle. I own. Check it out.

Seems like a good price.... I'd ditch the BDC though..... A Simmons 44 Mag scope is cheaper and better quality....
