257 weatherby
« on: July 27, 2012, 09:06:00 AM »
I've got a wyoming hunt coming up this fall, my goal is to take a whitetail on this hunt and I figured why not pull out the 257 for this. Its been a while since I've worked on a load for it and I was hoping to find a bullet in the 140 range, looks like the biggest I can find is 120. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm looking for a high BC, longer range type of bullet. In my 300 I like to use bullets like the Barnes that have a higher weight retention but I'm not as worried about it for this load, a Berger or Nosler ballistic tip type bullet would be just fine. Another thing is its the factory Mark V barrel which I believe has a 1 in 10 twist so a heavier bullet may not work anyways, just looking for some suggestions or input.

Pretty sure there aren't any .25 cal rifle bullets larger than 120 grns? But I could be wrong?

I think there are 125 gr pistol bullets..

120 is as heavy as I've seen in 25 caliber, not that there aren't any, but I haven't seen them.

Not sure why you'd want to go heavier than 120?

You will like this round.. it has some range to it..  The Partition is a good under 300 yard round..  Sierra makes a 117 gr. bullet I believe and in my .257 AI it shoots through the same hole as the 115 gr.  Nosler also makes a 120 gr. partition..
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

I would be very confident using a Partition or an Accubond in the 110 to 120gr range. Deadly.

Just something I wanted to try, I know its not going to kill anything any better. It tends to get pretty windy in wyoming and I was hoping to get a high BC bullet, companies like Berger seem to be going to heavier bullets and higher BC but theres still not a lot of options for the 25 cal.

Thanks for the input guys I am gonna get some sample packs of bullets to load up and see what shoots best, definitely would like to stay in the 110 and up.

I've never used anything bigger than a 110 gr. in my Weatherby and I've never had a deer take more than two steps...... Whitetail or Muley, it doesn't matter, that little gun hammers 'em!  :chuckle:

I use the 117gr Sierra's in my 25-06 and they put the smackdown on Mulies, Whitetail, Speed Goats and Bear!

115gr Berger's if you want the highest BC.

115gr NBT's will have less BC but will probably be easier to get to shoot.

100 grain TSX or TTSX bullets out of a 257 Weatherby have worked very well for me in Wyoming.  Heavier bullets may "resist" wind better but they are slower, so wind has more time to move them.  I doubt you would enough difference in wind drift to justify a 140 grain if you can even find such a thing.  I would rate accuracy much higher than bullet weight.

I've used the factory 100 grain hornady's for the last 15 years or so, antelope, bear, muleys, whitetails, blacktails, and coyotes, pretty magical really...... I would imagine bout anything would work pretty handily. 257 is my favorite round, though I am gettin sweet on my 240 lately.......

The 110 Accubond is pure death on a deer sized animal out of a 257 Weatherby mag.
