my phelps call does it again!
« on: July 28, 2012, 02:15:27 PM »
well i went out scouting this morning and had a cow run across the road so we got out and after about 15min i let out a cow call and i got an answer down in the next valley so me and my cuz worked our way over and found a lone spike in the clear cut so we hunkered down and i decided to try and cow call him in close...and then these other 2 show up with him...they came in from about 300yds to 30yds and when they couldnt find the "cow" that was calling they turned and went back the way they came from....they didnt know we were there they eventually just fed across the next hill....sorry about the video...no tripod + adrenaline=shakey camera  :chuckle:

It is very exciting to get in close and film elk no matter how many times you have done it. It gets my hart pumping every time and I have hundreds of hours of film. Good job on the filming

I do NOT agree with trying to "call in" elk before the season though. I was not there, but IMPO those elk busted due to scent. Now those elk  associate that call with a scent (human) and most likely will hesitate to come to that call, if they come at all. It is fun to call elk( hard to resist) but we as hunters have to remember not to educate the elk WE hunt. This will only make an animal that is pretty tough to hunt even tougher. Even if you're not hunting that particular area, someone else might be. I learned a ton of my "elk sounds" getting to a place where I know elk live, watching my scent, sitting still, not making a sound and record how they interact with each other with out any outside interference. You will learn what each sound means to the elk and take that knowledge and use it when it counts, hunting season  :twocents:
If you want to make it,
you can't fake it,
you gotta live it.

swweeettt...Not that I doubted the skills of Jphelps on his calls I was just waiting for somebody or myself to actually get footage in the field showing the call in action.  Been breaking mine and also breaking in the 2 mouth reeds in the car and I gotta tell you they are working out great and so far the best ones I've used yet.  Can't wait to put them to use here pretty soon.

I have complete faith in his cow calls...  I stopped cows that had spooked in their tracks..  they thought my fat ass was another elk evidently....

As always though, half the battle with calling elk is knowing how to use the call... how to use the right pitch...   right now, you use that "I am a hot hootchie momma looking for a bull" sound, you may not get much of a response...  you use the herd sounds (the mewing, calf calls, etc...  ) you are gonna get a response..
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

I've been really putting the calls to the test by trying to hit all the different sounds and pitches and so far they've held up better than anything i've used previously.  So again, Jphelps, you make some awesome calls.

Learning all the sounds is half the battle... the other half is knowing that even if slightly off pitch... you are still ok...  Not every elk sounds like the calls on a video or cd...  they vary as much as humans very in sound...  heck, I had a cow almost step on me while totally screwing around with my call once...  they are VERY curious as long as they do not smell you or see movement..

:yeah:  I agree, some of the worst callers I've heard out there ended up being young bulls themselves so yes, hearing sounds on a cd and dvd do help but it is nothing compared to real life learning experiences.  If you act like an elk and sound like an elk then you must be an elk right???? :chuckle:  I've been getting very good at that and have fooled some other hunters in the past with sounding like a real elk and with this year I just might get to mess with some hunters even worse, not intentionally of course...

I know about educating the elk...they didnt see or smell us....wind was in our favor....they just didnt see any elk where the sound was coming from....and there was a dump truck coming is part of the reason they took off....they only went about 100yds and started feeding just out of sight....they were not spooked....we watched them for another hour after that

Thats so true. I was shaking my head and rolling my eyes at a terrible caller last fall to the point of laughing out loud. Yep. You guessed it. A bull walked out of the timber.  Im always learning and getting schooled.   :chuckle:

Exactly..... Dad and I had both tagged out on cow tags.... We were on our last trip down the mountain and took a break in the shade.... Started totally screwing around with a variety of 4 different calls.... I mean really screwing around.... Some even sounded like a duck it was so bad.... Next thing we know a decent 3x4 MD came in behind us..... Spooking us just as bad as him.... Then we looked up the sage hillside to see a herd of 12 elk with a 6x7 bull in the lead heading straight for us... Got within 10 yards searching for the sounds before making their way off into the timber....

Agree deerhunter,,, but nothing still beats sneaking into a herd of cows, calves and spikes in the snow and fog, and just mingling using a call... until some wise ass has to sneeze and can not hold it back....  THEN, you are in the middle of a stampede of crazed spooked elk.. YOU HOPING you do not get bulldozed by a full grown elk with spike horns or sharp hooves....    :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :bash: :bash: :bash:   one of the best 4 hours I ever spent in the woods...
