Anybody hunt east of Mt. Vernon, around Cultus Mtns. for blacktail? General rifle season.

Guess nobody hunts deer in Skagit County.
Just looking for general info on road conditions and how far on the other side of the local hills(Cultus Mtn.) should go to get away from the road hunters.

I've bear hunted near there and scouted for blacktail. The bucks seem to be far and few,but there is some good ones. There are a few gated areas, most have quad trails going around the gates, but I know there has to be some areas up in there that hasn't had too much people pressure.

I live in Skagit County and know the area you're talking about. I tend to agree with what singleshot12 has posted.

Thanks, guys.
If you continue east, you will eventially come out near the Sauk River and not far from Darrington. I've heard it can get crowded in that area, so I was trying to avoid it.
I live near Lake Stevens and my hunting buddy lives in La Conner, so just trying to find
an area near his place as a starting point. We can stay at his place or take his trailer.
Any other suggestions for Westside Blacktails? Not looking for a trophy, just freezer meat.

I shot my first blacktail (farm deer) just north of Skagit College outside the city limits. Does that count. Spent lots of time in the hills above Clearlake they are there just hard to find.

Thanks, guys. Sudden Valley, that's pretty funny. I know there are a lot of houses there.
We are taking a look-see this weekend. If I see any deer, I will report back that Sudden Valley is the place to go
and the rest of this unit just doesn't have deer what-so-ever!
Everybody please stay home this season.

Devils mountain and lake ten is a good place to start and close to the freeway, seen some nice bucks up there over the years, its getting thicker every year though.

I lived and hunted in that neck of the woods from late eighties to the late nineties. Great bear hunting. But the deer hunting was tough. Rumor was poaching was a huge problem in this area. The deer hunting used to be pretty good north east of Sedro Woolley off of Hwy 20 if you could get into the timber company property. Out around Spada lake used to be OK too....but that was before Granite Falls exploded in population. Don't know what it's like now...

All but 2 of my deer in the last 8 years have come from 437.
I see some nice bucks from time to time, but I'm in it for the meat not the rack.
I'll be vague, but suffice it to say there are some good spots up S. Skagit Hwy if you know where to look (and get off the main road). There's also some good hunting somewhere E./S.E. of Big Lake. Lotsa road hunters in either area, but if you put in the boot time it'll pay off.
As for the Lake 10/Devils Lake area...expect to be competing with some of the locals. Much of that deer population spends plenty of time in their backyards.
....if you go too far east..........oops, I've said too much.

Checked the area out this past weekend. Lots of locked gates and private land.
Finney creek looked promising, but so does the local golf courses!
