Bunch of bulls in the Mission Unit this weekend.
« on: August 12, 2012, 03:21:19 PM »
I was in and out of the Mission Unit all weekend, sniffing around my old bear haunt. Came across 100-120 elk. A TRUCK LOAD of spikes, 7 mature bulls, all but one were decent 6 points and one out of this world seven point that was already hard at work on the brush, polishing up those antlers.  These were all off the back side of Naneam Ridge, I was hunting the Pole Flats area. The spikes were way tall this year, I'm talking 3ft plus, way tall spikes. I ran into the majority of the spikes on the Upper Basin Loop Rd. Above Clear Lake, just after you cross the bridge on the left at the clearing with the slash piles. They were hanging on the timbered bench on the upper left hand side of the clearing. Got into them 3 days in a row up on that bench.

None of the mature bulls were with the cows or spikes, 4 bulls were together and the other 3 were singles. The seven point was in the group of four.

Hopefully they're still there in the future. Now that the exact location of all those nice bulls is posted for the world to see I hope the native hunters/shooters don't go do the whack and stack.
They're sure to be hunting soon....
 :dunno:

You could post the GPS coordinates to make it a little easier.

I figured the description was good enough, I can pull a GPS location on tuesday. Beside for the types hunting this time of year, there's allot easier pickings in the elk Dept locally. Trust me, they have it down to a science.

Touchy subject.   Cool to hear, and much of the old days made you get excited for the fall.  Now its more of a thought, HOLY CRAP.  tribal harvest this time of year is phenomenal and SICKENING all rolled into one, and that is one of their prime targets.   Sad is all.  Yes we will have the fellars on here that think its all within their rights and the same ole arguement.  Meanwhile, another great bull bites the dust, IN AUGUST WITHOUT a tag.   Maybe all 5 bulls at once.  Its all OK, so I guess its fine to kill them all.   No offense to Biggerhammer.  He got to see something cool and he was sharing the moment.   Downfall of this site and the internet I suppose.   Its a great scouting tool for those scouring for information

One also has to get out of the truck and get back in there a ways, besides. These elk aren't holding much.

Hell No....If there were pics posted on this thread the natives would have already pinpoint the locations of these monsters.  Next thing you know you would be seeing pics of elk piled in the back of a 1988 Ford F150 with bondoed quarter panels and beer cans on the dash.  It would be a travesty...  :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

Bighammer thanks for not posting pics  :chuckle: :chuckle:

THIS POST IS NOT INTENDED TO BE RACIST OR OTHERWISE CONSTRUED AS DEROGATORY.  IT IS PURELY MAKINE FUN THE ABOVE POSTS CONCERNING THE WHEREABOUTS OF BIG ELK, CAUSE I AM SURE POACHERS (TO INCLUDE ALL RACES / NATIONALITIES / GENDERS) DON'T KNOW WHERE TO FIND ELK TO KILL .

Its ceded tribal hunting.  Its open 24/7  365 as far as they are concerned.   Generally peaks in August for velvet harvest through September and then again November-January or until the snow gets too deep.  If not in belief, check out the racks at the Sportsman show here in Yakima, and there are a couple that do get away from their trucks and are QUITE successful.

You can throw the big "God" switch on the Internet and I can assure you. The big bulls in velvet will still be hitting the groung this Aug and for many to come, I can assure you of that. It's just the way it is. The Clockum is much more open and easier pickings and a stone toss away.

So true why would you post the place where you see animals.   That is just like putting money in the trees off of that loop road you speak of, for the poachers to cash in on!!!
