how to freeze crab in the shell?
« on: August 18, 2012, 09:51:02 AM »
I know if it was just meat, I'd put it in a ziplock bag and fill with water and freeze.  What's the best way to freeze crab in the shell?

Once it is cooked.... clean them real good.  drop 4 or 5 halves into a freezer bag get all the air out and into the freezer.  I did a whole bunch of crab that way and it is still good...

I just thaw under cool water, and if you want it warmed, drop em on a cookie sheet in the oven on like 200 till hot enough... or throw em on the grill with your steaks or burgers...
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Calling an illegal alien an 'undocumented immigrant' is like calling a drug dealer an 'unlicensed pharmacist'.

I've tried it 6 ways from sunday, milk, water,in bags, cardboard milk containers, freezzer jam containers....................... when you've been spoiled and had nothing but fresh for 30+ years the only way to freeze it  IMO is pick all the meat out and then vaccum seal it,it has a touch of been frozen taste to it but if you use the meat in a cooking recipe............ you can't tell the difference.

Vacuum seal and freeze.

Tried this.  Punched a hole in 2 bags, even when wrapped in paper towels.  They are in ziplock freezer bags and in the deep freezer as huntbear suggested.

It's only got to hold a month until I can get it to the end user in Sept.

Is the end user quite a ways from the salt chuck?.........................Most likely they won't know the difference. We hauled a bunch of " sea spiders"(that's what they called em in south dakota).............They thought they were great .................... I on the otherhand knew better.

Froze some for 8 days till Mom could come and eatem.  Cooked whole......chilled on ice whole..........froze individually in gallon ziplock bags.

Thawed in fridge 24 hours....cleaned them...and they tasted just like fresh caught with "maybe" a tad bit more crabby taste.

Short term this worked perfect.

Paper plates are the key!  Put a paper plate in the vaccum bag, put your crab legs and such in, then put another paper plate on top.  I've done this a lot, and have only had 1 puncture.

Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.”
