Lets see your varmint setup!
« on: August 19, 2012, 10:01:12 AM »
Ive done this in the archery section before with great success!  Figured it would be fun to post pics/share what you are using to bag your varmints!  This can also be a great tool for newbies getting into varmint hunting.  Helps them decide on a rifle and what ammo to use!

Lets see a pic of your Go to Gun, accessories, and go to ammo!

Here is my coyote/varmint setup.

Gun
Savage Axis Bolt Action Chambered in 223 REM.
Ammo
Remington Pointed Soft Point 55gr.
Optics
Cheap 3-9 Power that came with the gun.  (works great for my needs. 250yards or less.)
Bipod
Cheap ebay purchase (under 20 bucks.)

Sometimes ill bring along some wood shooting sticks I made as well because my bipod is designed for prone shooting only.

Thanks...Running a BSA Platinum 6-24x44 with mil-dots... It's so long because it also has the 8" sunshield attached.  I know a lot of people knock BSA, but their platinum scopes are pretty decent scopes, I have 3 of them now and never had any issues at all with them at all, and the optics are nice and clear.

My go to gun is the Remington 700 VTR .308 with Hornaday SST 125 gr.  Sold only by Cabelas they are a light recoil round and group well for factory ammo.  My night hunting set up is a Winchester 1200 12 ga with Coyote Hevi-shot.  Nice pattern tight pattern at 50 yards.  My last is a DMPS Predator Special .223 20" barrel.  I have a Nikon Coyote scope and a light mounted on top.  Have yet to drop anything with it.  I was having issues at night with quick follow shots and calling in more than one coyote.  The bolt action just not fast enough for follow up shots or taking shots at multiple targets that usually are not stationary after the first shot with the VTR.  I love it but it is loud as it has a factory muzzle break machined in the barrel.  I added an Black Hawk Axiom Stock.  My son can shoot it with the adjustable length of pull stock and recoil reducing springs.  I have a permanent disability to my right hand and need pistol grip or thumbhole stocks to better grip the weapon.  Saw a few small coyotes on my recent trip to Bend, Oregon.  We camped about 1 mile from a train track and could hear coyotes group howling just about every time a train hit the crossing and blew its horn.

I have an axiom on my rem 700 .308... Love it for shooting, but carrying the thing for any length of time is a little difficult. If you skim bed them over the aluminum block you will have a great seating and the accuracy is awesome... I use my .308 for coyotes right now, while i finish my .22-250 build.  I did add a rail and light to the forend of the stock for night hunting.. will post pics of it later tonight...
