Archery deer opens in a week. I need a bow
« on: August 24, 2012, 08:29:01 AM »
Hey guys!!!

I got drawn for a multi season deer tag this year (Lucky me, right?) and, with archery deer opening in a week, I need a bow.  I've never shot one before so I need someone to explain what I need to look for in a bow.  I figure if I can get one in the next couple of days that I'd be able to pick up some arrows from Cabelas and shoot a couple into the tire stack I have in the back yard and be good to go.  I need one that can get a kill out to 100 yards just to make sure I can get a kill because I've never tried to get close to a deer before since my rifle can kill a deer from the road no matter how far out I see him.  If you can help, please let me know.

Thanks

You are going to need the extra bright Luminoks for your hunt. The first arrow is really just a test shot to see how much higher you need to aim. Lob the first one, make a correction, lob the second, third, and fourth. Eventually you will hit it somewhere. Keep the light taped onto your stabilizer and you will be able to get shots off right at dark when they can't really see as well.

I got thru the first 3 sentences and was like "wtf, i am not taking this guy east", then i finished it, glad it was a joke.

H2o, it's not taping the flashlight, it is using rubber bands man, quicker to remove if needed.....if you remember to remove it at all.....
To hunt and butcher an animal is to recognize that meat is not some abstract form of protein that springs into existence tightly wrapped in cellophane and styrofoam.

The problem is, its not a joke. If you went to cabelas right now I gurantee "that guy" will be there.

I am sure "that guy" will be there, i have seen them there. What i meant was Doublej inparticular, i am taking him east in a few weeks and for a brief moment thought he was "that guy"....
No different than the 3 rounds a year guys coming to a hunters sight in at a range near you, blow the dust off, get a scope cut and your good to go....ugh......

Forgive my oversight on the tape. You are correct that the rubber bands work better. Again, a thousand pardons.

dude I felt like I was worse than that person this year  :chuckle: I actually went bear hunting and hadn't shot my own rifle in a year, well since before deer last season....I have been doing a bunch of shooting just hadn't taken baby out, she was living with the cops, so I spent more time shooting other peoples firearms, and smaller easier to transport stuff....22, 45, 9mm, 243wssm, 257AI, but my little 7mmmmoh8 had been collecting dust since deer season....finally took her to the range and she is dead on still at 100yds and so am I so we are good to go  :chuckle:

How many rounds should I fire if my gun is still shooting a 1/2" group?

Archery equipment is a different story.. I've been shooting my bow for months and still feel like I need practice.

As many as you feel comfortable or confindent in, no need to shoot more that you feel you need to, i used to voluneteer range help out at issaguah and i am sure it is the same else where in i would see once a year shooters that could barely hit paper, shoot a group of 3-5 all over the place and call it good. I myself like you have rifles i am very comfortable and confident in and one or two rounds just to check and i am fine to go....
Archery yep, the more the better as you are also training your body, eyes, focus, range estimation etc, so practice, practice.....

Well said.  I agree with that.  I rarely shoot more than 5 rounds in my hunting rifle it it groups well initially.
