Easier to hunt deer in velvet?
« on: September 04, 2012, 11:05:43 AM »
Just curious, is it easier to hunt mulies in early season when they are in velvet? I see lots of big bucks getting killed on many sites, pretty sure they hang out in the open because of the velvet. There are a few beasts taken in Utah already this season.

Maybe I am wrong :dunno:

I don't know if it is necessarily because they are in velvet. Probably more that they haven't been chased around by everyone and their uncle yet.  Deer aren't stupid and it doesn't take long for them to figure out what is going on after a few arrows or bullets fly their way.   :twocents:

Nothing to do with velvet. No pressure in the deer. If a bow could shoot a 150 yards accurately then it would be easy. Getting the under 40 yards is a challenge.

I watch alot of bucks all summer and once they go hard horn they sure are hard to find.  So i would think they would be easier to find in velvet but still hard to kill.

I know with blacktails they change habits once they are hard horned. Always figured their horns may be tender and they don't want to hit them on limbs, or tear them up in the brush. I think on blacktails it's because of the velvet, not hunting pressure. Can't answer that on mulies as I don't have much experience on them in the early season.

:yeah:
I have a 2pt, 3 pt and a 3x4 near my house. I have seen them almost everyday this summer but 8/31 i saw the 2pt and the 3x4 with velvet coming off and no 3pt. 9/1 I only saw the 2pt. As of 9/2 i havent seen any of them.

Once they go hard horned there patterns do change so it is easier when they have velvet on.
