Too little weight?
« on: September 03, 2012, 09:39:20 PM »
I plan on using my Mauser 270 to try and put down a spike this year. My question to all of you is a properly placed 150 grain Hornady be enough to do the job. Working on my fifth year with out any love... Hopefully that all changes this year! 😜

A properly placed .22 will do the job.  You do what you're supposed to and a .270 will be plenty

You can't get anything heavier than 150 grains in a 270, it will be fine. Many elk have been killed with 130's out of 270's.

Get this- people actually used to kill elk with 30-30's.   :yike:

140 grain bullets also work!     my 1st elk was with a 140 gr .270, second and third 150 gr 30/06.

Not really. They're all about the same- 130, 140, 150. Just pick one, doesn't make a lot of difference. Most important is to find a bullet your rifle "likes" and shoots tight groups.

The wife is using 120 barnes bullets in a 7mm-08.  I'd say it will do fine as long as you aren't trying 300 yard texas heart shots.
