No luck
« on: September 05, 2012, 12:46:21 PM »
So I have a good spot over a water hole in the Manastash. Yesterday I had a neat little 4x4 muley come into 30 yards looking straight at me. Would not turn until he finally decided I was not a tree and bolted.

Then this morning I hear this wailing and respond with a couple cow calls. A yearling comes flying in and ends up about 5 yards away on the back side of the blind I built. It's an antlerless/spike bull gmu and I would have gladly taken the young one. I have no shot and it decides after a minute or so that something is not right and blazes out of there.

All that racket brought in a nice cow to about 35 yards. I am ranging her and congratulating myself because I am about to fill my tag. Then I see the two babies with her. Couldn't do it. Guess I'm soft but they were young and no way they are going to make it without mom. Hopefully they grow up and come back next year.

Had several does and fawns in range and willing to turn broad side for me of course. It's been kind of neat to see them so close. I could really go for a nice broad side shot at a reasonable range on a legal animal though.

Good for you for passing that shot up!  I would have had a difficult time as well!

Thanks for passing the momma, the world needs more hunters like you!  I bet you will be rewarded by the man up stairs with a monster spike!

I always heard with elk that the herd would take care of orphaned calfs, unlike deer. :dunno:

Heard the same but like this gentleman I wouldn't have made the shot.  Just think what the 2 would be in a couple of years.

I passed 4 bulls tonight 5x4 5x5, kinda small, 1 big spike and 1 small spike. Have been in the elk, just nothing worth throwing an arrow at. Cant shoot a big one if you shoot a small one (especially with a multi elk!)
