missed opportunity
« on: September 10, 2012, 01:23:10 PM »
So i woke up an hour late today...didnt leave the house till 430....ive been in the woods by 3:30 everyday trying to locate a bull...i get to my second spot and let a bugle out and no answer....waited about 5 min and let out a bugle with chuckle and about 100yds behind me one lets a nasty bugle out in the timber....my cuz is asleep in the rig anf i get him up and by then i can hear the bull making a highway through the brush right at me....i didnt think he would run all the way to the road but damn near did....it was still to dark to see but he stopped abput 50yds short and turned around....we worked our way back on a old road and set up and cow called...he hung up about 70 yds and wouldnt commit...off he went down the trail so we went after him....after about 5hrs of following the herd we came up in an alder bottom and it started looking real good....we snuck threw real quiet and i took 2 steps up on a little hill and froze to a elk looking at me...i slowly side stepped behind a tree and cow called...after 5min he started heading my way...well i thought he was...he ended up circling back with his cows that i didnt know were there...i crawled up another 40yds and a spike jumped up and ran and i did a popping grunt at him and he stopped and turned around and relaxed...he eventually walked outbof sight so i waved my cuz up and we start working our way towards him looking for the other bull...i take a few more steps and there he is with the cows i  didnt see...were pegged so i bugled behind me and he turned and stared for 10min..they all walked over the hill so i ran up 50 yds and bugled tryin to give him no option to come in with a challenge..he didnt budge so i walked another 5 yrds and 2 cows had me pegged...they took off running and the rest of the herd didnt know whats going on so i cow called and a cow stopped broadside at 50yds ...i drew back put my pins on her and she moved  :bash: so i let down...and just as i do that the 5pt comes up and stands in the same spot so i start drawing back and about 1/4 of the way back my d loop breaks  :bash: :bash: :bash: my first shot opportunity at a bull and this happens...well it launches my arrow up in a tree so there goes $12 ontop of my dloop breaking....my cuz tried to cut them off but wasnt fast enough.....what a day...we ended up walking about 5 miles in a hug circle through timber and swamps....most fun ive had in the woods...just getting that close to a nice elk .....even though i didnt get to notch my tag today i had a blast....we backed out and let them go the rest of the day...were going back in the morning again...they ended up going right back where we started this morning......how do you guys get those bulls to come in that wont leave their cows?....every once in a while he would chuckle at us...and after he left he bugled on his way out
