another bull slips away
« on: September 16, 2012, 06:56:14 PM »
Well i ended up getting to go out today at last minute and with the woods shut down to vehicle.access i wanted to try a walk in that ive been curious about....got there a little late...about 630 and headed in....got up on the first ridge and i let out a deep bugle and got an instant response...we worked our way around and found the timber patch he was in but couldnt find a way down....the brush was way to thick....it took us 4 hrs to figure a way out to get down to him...you couldnt see 3 ft infront of you it was so thick...we eventually got to the bottom of the hill and he stepped out broadside at 50yds but no shooting lanes...to many branches....almost every cow call, bugle, chuckle i would throw out there he would respond...he eventualy moved put of sight so we worked our way up closer...we snuck into 65yds and couldnt get any closer..there was a few cows and the bull wasnt in sight so i bugled and he lit up again and came running back and bedded down in between us and his cows....i backed off and left my cuz in position for a shot and i started cow calling and threw out a few bugles hoping piss him off enough to come over and fight but no dice...after an hour of bugling with him back and forth my cuz decided to try and move in..the bull kept dozing off so when he would he would move up a little...that is till the cow he didnt see had him pegged...she eventually trotted off and the bull followed her to the top then started tearing trees up so i bugled at him and tore up trees trying to get him back down but he wouldnt budge...after 15 min of this somthing behind them spooked them and they took off running....9 hours of crawling , calling and waiting out the window...oh well thats how my season went...its been my best season so far...in elk everyday....had bulls responding almost daily....looking forward to late season

With all that said what do you guys do to get those bulls to come in? This has happened a couple times this season and i just cant get them to come those last 20yds no matter what calls i do
