Colockum Elk-cougar
« on: September 16, 2012, 08:48:02 PM »
The fires were pretty bad this weekend.  The elk have gone silent, the roads are closed.  Luckily, I was up there Thur. night before they closed the Nanuem, and I didn't find out until I was leaving.  I was wondering why I had the whole mountain to myself?
I didn't see any spikes (when I could see).

This morning I was sitting on an open hillside, and 20 yrds below me, walks out a cougar.  He calmly paralleled me, and then walked down away from me.  I was pretty much shocked with excitement, fear, nervousness, awe, etc.
I thought, slowly grab your bow, and nock an arrow.  Then, at 40 yards he stopped, sat down, turned and looked at me.  I thought, "OH SH>>>"!  He's gonna see my eyes, and come investigate.
Then, out of the corner of my eye, another cougar walks out on the same trail at 20yrds :yike:
Now, there's no way I am going to be able to nock an arrow, and shoot at a Pack of Lions 20yrds from me, on an open hillside with no cover.
So, I panic'd, and just froze.  They slowly walked down in front of me, and out of site.

Frickin Awesome!!!!! :yike:

I know :'(
Now that I look back, I doubt I will ever have another chance at a cougar, with a bow, at 20yrds, on the ground :bash:

However, at the time you have 2 cougars in front of you, and all you have is a sharp stick....I was thinking more along the lines of.....Protect my Neck, If they rip my face off...how am I going to stop the bleeding, and make it back to the camper.
Stuff like that was going thru my head........

Wait a minute, you had not one, but two cougars at twenty yards and you didn't even nock an arrow? That  missed opportunity will haunt you forever most likely.

To bad you didn't get one! That is something you will always remember. We had 3 guys see different cougars during the season but no one had a shot opportunity.
People get offended at nothing at all. So, speak your mind and be unapologetic.

I always used to carry a sidearm, but lately I've been liking the least amount of weight possible.

dude you should have thumped one of those cats, they would have just run off, and after the one died with your arrow in it the other one would have continued on, the chance of them attacking are pretty darn slim, now if they were young toms they might have been a liitle curious as to why his buddy was laying there dead but would have been fine, like others have said not many get those kind of oppurtunities, sounds like it was fun anyways though
