Point blank elk calls.
« on: September 18, 2012, 09:26:22 PM »
Last week I was helping with a elk hunt and could not find my reed calls. I stopped at the store and saw these calls designed by Joel Turner. I am not sure if I got a bad one or not but I did not like the call at all. It was flimsy and to high pitched and I could not get a consistant sound. Did I get a bad one ? anyone with experience with this call
If its brown knock it down

They are junk :twocents: I bought 3 of them and all of them were crap. I have talked to more then a few people about it. Bad latex and the calls sound like crap when put next to my others. Had a hard time keeping the same notes.

He is an amazing caller so I really expected the calls to atleast be decent, But I could not get any sounds out of them that sounded like an Elk.

Kinda my thoughts as well. No need to let him know about it. Thousands of people voice ideas and thoughts about gear online. No matter if it a member or not. It's o.k for people to say they did not like something.

I thought it was just me, glad to hear I wasn't the only one who didn't like them. I bought a few of them and never could do well with them. I will stick with my Bugling Bull reeds.

Pretty sad when 4/4 people that have posted so far have had bad things to say. Hope they do see this and start taking notes and asking questions.

:chuckle: Could be the case but I bet atleast one of the 4 of us has called in a few elk before :chuckle: So I won't buy into that one to much. I am no great caller like I have said many many times. I can call elk and know when something sounds off. When I can grab one of my other 10+ mouth calls and make them sound good. I know it has to be the call :chuckle:

I used to at least be able to make good cow elk sounds. But that was 15 to 20 years ago. I kind of quit practicing and quit using elk calls because I wasn't hunting them during the rut anymore. Now I need to get practiced up again, and really need to purchase some new calls. I'm thinking I should pick up one of these Point Blank calls to start out with. That way if it doesn't sound right, I can just blame it on the call!

I know he sounds good "most of the time" when using them. Maybe we are not good enough for the calls. I had to lisen to them for 5 days strait last year 2 booths down from mine, same row :yike: There was a few funny notes that made me laugh :chuckle:

I have a translator app for my phone. I wonder if it can translate turkey to elk?

I was exclusively a Larry D. Jones call user for many many years.  So when the wife drew her Toutle Bull tag last year the first thing I did was pick up the Point Blank calls in preparation for the hunt.  After a week I threw them out thoroughly disappointed.  I had some used calls from before the sale and they still sounded better and held up better.  May say Jones on them, but definitely not the same call.  Guess I should have pulled the trigger on Jones calls when Larry offered it to me years ago.

Ended up having BattleReady get me some special Knight & Hale reeds from some private staffer stash.  Wholly crap were those some top notch calls!!!  After cursing Primos for years he also showed me how to fit the Primos calls to my mouth and I've finally gotten where I'm digging those too when I need a soft call.

This year Glen Berry gave me an X-Series reed at the NABA show.  I have not found it to be a great cow talker, but man do I like it for bugles.  Just might become my go to bugler for many years to come.  No bending, no shaping, no deburring the frame.  Had that thing in my cheek for five straight days and I did not notice any change in pitch and no irritation in my mouth.
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."
