My Yearly Pack List Question!
«
on:
September 22, 2012, 08:50:13 PM »
So I have done this almost every year since joining this addicting site. I just bought a new pack and some new camp gear so my list is still in a state of flux. Just seeing what you all plan on carrying in your pack...
This is my last year pack list. I use a day pack, drive in and drive back to camp each morning and night. So I don't need to much and the pack is just a Cabelas scout pack. Since I upgraded to the Costco special pack (WAY more room for me to carry unnecessary and useless stuff) once I have that list together I will post it up.
By the way, the only reason I do this, is so that I will hopefully be beaten over the head and quit carrying so much crap with me (but it never works). I also get great ideas and end up re-configuring allot from the info I get here. This is a combined Elk/Deer list, so the number of items change but with the exception of the tent the list stays pretty much the same for both seasons

Wow. How many knives you need? 550 cord and spare shoe laces? Just giving you a hard time, I always carry way too much stuff when I do day hunts too.

In my opinion, get rid of out of your day pack....the:
bore sighting kit
The utility rope if you have 550 cord. Your list says you have utility rope, rope and 550 cord and spare boot laces then rope again later.
most of your knives. Look into a Havalon. Leave all the other knives at camp.
I don't think you need garbage bags, Alaska game bags and quarter bags.

Holy *censored*...
My day pack is this:
Bottle of water, knife, lighter, led light, small gps, a little 550 cord and some candy bars.
It's a day trip....mark the truck, turn the gps off and go.

I would like going hunting with you. I know we would never be short on supplies...... your carrying all that though.
Well prepared but you could probably cut down in weight buy leaving a few things behind.

Yeah, I pack to much crap!!!! One of the things that will most likely happen this year, is that I will separate my bag with the fanny pack that it comes with. It holds allot less, but for the majority of hunting it will probably work out fine. I do like to have my camelback full of water depending on the terrain that I am in. I will post my updated list in a couple of days!
P.S. I ALWAYS get asked about the shoelaces AND the 550 cord. I guess old habits die hard. 5 Years as a Cav Scout and some things are just to sacred. Like shoelaces!

This response partially meant in jest, but most of it is from the heart and experience for what you don't need... But I do keep extra rope in the truck.... And yes, I do double up on some of the things you list 'in my 29' camp trailer', but certainly not in my backpack.

Yeah some of my list didn't cut and paste the way I wanted it to.
My Backpack and spare boots stay at camp. My Outdoors Edge knife set is in what I call my Kill bag (Left at truck and brought to kill if accessible to process at the kill site). My day pack is all that comes with me.
Bore Sight kit is actually at the camp.. I took a NASTY spill and hit my scope 2 years ago. Was glad I had it just for my own confidence. It's the really small laser kind that looks like a bullet. First Aid kit... as a Fireman I readily agree that I overpack on that!
Newspaper and firestarter are different. I use the newspaper to dry my boots overnight (Wetside hunting plus I fell into a swamp last year. I am a clutz!)
Flagging tape I typically use for areas to come back to or I use it to guide some of the guys I hunt with into the area that I want them at (I have a special Bow I use).
Batteries is actually something I should look into a little more. My Costco Batteries are really crappy lately it seems. I go through 3 sets in my Garmin Rhino and when the battery power gets low, the GPS function goes to crap. So I always carry about 6 sets just in case. Anyone have some recommendations for batteries? Planned on using Energizer this year.
Ahhh My head band, hey a guy has to look pretty doesn't he?! Actually I have a surgical US Army headband that works REALLY good in keeping sweat outta my eyes. Better than a bandana and it keeps my bandanas for cleaning my knives and for snot rags (Different rags though).
Underwear, socks and BDU's.... Hmm this one I do get crap for at camp. I have gone WAY to many days without clean underwear and like you already mentioned wings and peppers!!!!! I don't like my BDU's drying near a fire because they absorb smoke readily, so I usually rotate clothes between 2 sets (unless I fall into swamps) and I have a full set of clothes including shoes that I wear at camp. Having a comfortable pair of jeans and a nice set of camp shoes makes the experience much better (plus safer after the whiskey drinking)
.
I love my Field Jacket.... But you are right, it actually sucks for hunting in!
I carry sudafed over benadryl because of my allergies, but I do carry a small amount of liquid benadryl in my first aid kit. It absorbs faster than the pills and is better if someone has an allergic reaction.
Truck.... Well unfortunately my Truck is well known by the mechanic shop where I elk hunt. One years was alternator and starter started going out shortly after alternator went. next year Fuel Lift pump went out (98 Dodge Ram). I have aspare built from a buddy who knows a guy that said it fell off the back of a truck.........
Griddle goes on camp stove. I didn't include camp food list, but Oatmeal is now on the list!!! Good point.
By the way.. I love your response!!!! Makes great points and I love to get people's advice on EVERYTHING!!!! I still consider myself a newbie so I absorb EVERYTHING!
