Do us all a favor....
« on: September 22, 2012, 09:25:41 PM »
I know we all enjoy the many elk calls that are available,  but after recent observations in the field I think a few of us need to realize when and how to use them.  We observed three different hunters in our area this year that bugled while standing out in a wide open meadow during the day.  Or cow called and bugled after shooting light was long gone or from the road directly next to a hunting camp...  As a result the elk got a good education and we seldom if ever heard a bull bugle during the day.  Which was great for those of us that drew a bull tag this year.   Do us all a favor and get a little wiser this off season or leave the calls at home next year.

I think you mean, "Do us all a favor." Maybe it was someone  that doesn't know much/anything about elk hunting. Maybe they are new hunters. Maybe they are youngsters who decided to enjoy this great sport without any mentoring. Perhaps it was a Hunt Wa member that requested info on how to hunt elk and was shot down by other members not willing to help. Possible?

Where are you hunting?  Where I hunt I can hear elk bugling and cows calling all the time day and night.   A lot of times I can pull over blow the bugle with the engine still running and get a response.  In fact, it seems the more hunters in the area the more vocal the elk are.  But, I do practice a lot with my hootchie mama which seems to make a difference.

I am not understanding the comment about the "elk getting a good education".  Sounds to me like he was in an area with too many hunters anyway.

I have heard both bugles and cow calls at night (from real elk).

Maybe we should just wish you better luck next year?? :dunno:

Every years people are always complaining about the techniques others use  :bash:

Just because it don't work for you, don't mean it don't work for others.

I my self have sat around a camp fire and have had elk bugle and even brought in a bull to with in 30 yards of our camp fire. When he bugeled from the middle of the road and could not see him in the dark I jumped in the back of my truck  :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

I have sat  next to my jeep and bugled for elk and have gotten many responses. Why go down that canyon if the elk are not talking. What says they will answer you any different from the bottom of the canyon then from the top.
If they dont answer or you cant hear them is not going to make a difference from top or bottom  :dunno:

Now I do recall on a few occasions bugling from open areas with only a few trees for cover or a bush to help with concealment.

Sounds like maybe he should hunt the wilderness where there are no roads to call from...

I will agree to an extent. This year the best spot I had and the place I hung my stand was probably less than 150 yards off the road. Opening morning I was greeted to the sound of hunters rolling down the road, stopping, shutting the vehicle off, slamming the doors, and bugling every 100 yards. I shot a very respectable bull less than an hour after they left in that spot. Can that educate them? I say yes. Does it matter? I say no... :twocents:

 :chuckle:

I did that one year down near Coos Bay on Weyerhauser land in the 80's during early archery.  I had been up since pre-dawn calling off landings and other high points.  I would usually give about ten minutes after stopping to start calling.  While waiting at one spot, I heard a bugle way down below me, so I called back.  "He" bugled again and I could tell right away it was another hunter as he repeated the exact same call.  I decided to have some fun, yeah maybe I was a bit of a jerk, but jeese, learn to call better....  I bugled and grunted each time they called.  After a while, I could see them (and hear them) "sneaking" up through the trees.  They could not see my truck when I stood up, waved, and drove away.

BTW, Karma rewarded me with a bear the next day and a nice fat cow a week after that.

To the OP, I agree, people do way too much calling and not enough listening, but I have had a fair amount of responses in the middle of the day as others have also stated.  It does suck them calling near your camp though.

I have spent years talking to elk at night.  Less likely to call in people that way.  Though I have still called in several with weapons.  :chuckle:

On opening morning i went in on a closed gate ...i  bugled and cow called and a road hunter heard me and started answering back  to me...it was quite entertaining hearing the terminator bugle go off then i would move down the hill and reply and i would hear his truck start up and race around in front of me and bugle so i would go back up the hill and bugle and he would jump back in his truck and race back around to try and bugle this "bull"  up to the road  :chuckle: he did this back and forth for an hour

I also call elk at night....got 6 bulls fired up this year doing that...had one charge at me standing on the road next to my truck this year....that was exciting
