Baiting or no?
« on: October 02, 2012, 01:34:19 PM »
I was wondering, if a hunter kills a coyote, mountain lion, deer or other animal and leaves the gut pile, if they later shoot a bear near or over that gut pile would that be considered baiting?  :dunno:

I called and asked that very question, if I knew of a few gutpiles can I go back and bear hunt them???  Officer said NO.   If I knew where the piles were it was considered baiting,  If I stummbled acorss a new one and saw a bear then I could take it.  If I stumbbled across a new pile and "sat on it" until a bear came... that would be considered baiting.

Now I just follow crows in heavily used areas, I don't look for piles anymore...  I have not shot a bear this year, I have seen two this year but rules are rules and did not shoot.

The "officer" is wrong! You may hunt over a gutpile as long as it has not been moved to improve its use as "bait".  If you drag a deer or elk to a convenient place to gut it, that is fine as long as the remains are the result of "normal" legal hunting practices.  Kind of like hunting over spilled grain for waterfowl, as long as it is spilled during normal agricultural practices.   :twocents:

similiar to hunting around bee hives, kind of like hunting over a berry patch.

I agree. Its about intent. If I find a "hot spot" (food, water, shelter), I'm huntin the hell out of it. Its not baiting
Its the goin'.....Not the gettin'
