Help me pick a winch
« on: October 01, 2012, 12:23:44 AM »
Hey guys,

I am new to the winch world so thought I would ask. I am getting ready to buy one to throw on my samurai!!!

These are the 2 that I have decided I like the most. There is not much in price difference in them about 30-40.00. Both seem pretty close in spec's.

I am just looking for any feedback on them and which you think might be better.

thanks!!!!

I think for a few $'s more the 8500 would be the way to go. More pulling power but not that much but it sure would look sweet on the front!

I think either should work fine, I haven't heard any bad of one over the other.  Google up some reviews.  I just welded on receivers front and rear yesterday on my Samurai, so I can use my M8000 Warn.  That's not a bad winch but the prices went up.

Wired for towing now, tow bar on, now need to fix the cargo rack so I can throw packs on top, add a clicky start wire, and I think I'm done.  Added fire extinguisher, hijack lift, 12v air compressor, tire plugs, tire chains, starter fluid for reseating the bead, fuses, shovel, ax.   I know I'm missing something.

The explosion burning creates a vacuum pulling in enough air to re seat the bead. old wheeler jeeper trick.
Spend the extra money and get a warn WARN M8274-50 upright. fastest line speed and pure pulling power. Or if your transfer case allows you could always go PTO and have raw power and save your alternator and battery

I've always had winches. Both brands have been around a long time. Maybe look around for a Warn " Tabor " model and compare the 3. I have a 9000 lb Tabor on my truck.
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............

If your only considering those two winches than go with the smitty, but wait till the four wheel drive swap meet at the puyallup fair grounds its put on by the moonshiners jeep club or for truck fest. Bring cash to both events and you will walk out very happy

8274 is about $1700. You don't need that big of a winch for a small vehicle.

Carp what will this rig be for? If just for rollong around on logging roads you dont need much of a winch at all. If your going to be wheeling go big. Ive been real stuck before, or have needed to winch into a tree to set a rig on top of another.

I have some experience in picking Wenches... First find a bar of appropriate size and crowding...

Oh, wait, wrong spelling... ummmmmmm never mind, carry on..
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Calling an illegal alien an 'undocumented immigrant' is like calling a drug dealer an 'unlicensed pharmacist'.

Hell for a wittle baby samurai you might as well throw a quad winch on it  :chuckle:

Either one will do fine. All of my buddies run csi and like them. I just run come-a-longs

I'd go with the Smittybilt. Its 2x as fast as the Superwinch.

Both hold similar amounts of cable, and both draw similar amounts of amperage.

I ran a Smittybilt on my jeep . As good as any other. And better than a lot of others.

I had an XRC8 on my Jeep as well. It pulled like a mo-fo every time I flipped the switch.
