Tillamook Fall Chinook

Been trying to plan a trip to Tillamook for a trip for my dad and my grandpa. Gramps has been fishing down there for years but never gone out with a guide and really knocked them dead.

My debacle is whether to go last 3 days of october, or go the 2nd week in November and fish the river. I've been talking with Wayne Priddy and he said he would pick the river but my grandpa is on the fence about what he wants to go, and i kinda put the decision to him. I don't know much about the fishing down there so i don't really have any insight to offer wisdom to go later rather than earlier. Or vice versa.

Anyone have any insight/input? I need to get it booked ASAP and just want to have the best results possible. Thanks in advance

There's a couple articles in this month's issue of NW Sportsman about Nehalem and Tillamook Bays. I've never been down there for that fishery but would sure like to give it a try.

Thanks for the reply. Thought there would be more people who've been down there. I let gramps pick and he decided last 3 days of October. Should be a dynamite trip. Maybe we'll get lucky and it will rain early and we can shoot up the river and hook into a mack truck chinook! Yeehaw!

Fishing has been good there. I fished it for years and your dates are good for the bay or possibly rivers if we get rain. We always slated Oct 15th to have good luck in the bay. Som real HOGS come out of there. Have fun!

Ask whatever guide you are going with.  The reason you are going with a guide is because they know the fishery.  Listen to what they tell you will be best.

Thanks for the info fellas. Wayne said they normally start fishing the river first week of november. But now till end of November is good. They have been getting some in the mid to upper 30's recently. Which is good news. Hope i get a hog while we're down there. I'll be sure to give a full report.

Contact Clancy and Ron, they are probably there.I use to fish Nehalem pretty frequently in the fall, BIG Kings in shallow bay makes for an interesting fight. If you do go stop into Pirates Cove restaurant just above Garibaldy, nice view of the entrance and good food last we were there. Easy fishery on the Halem, even stay and park your boat out front ready to go at the dock. Cut plug off the dropper.

Tilly did great in the Jaws yesterday, not much in the Corn (Ghost) hole yet! Lol

I think you made the right choice with the October trip.  I like the bay for number and quality of fish, but the Nehalem and Wilson are great.  Wilson is my all time favorite steelie river to fish.  You should be warned though - sea lion problem in the bay is a real problem right now.  Last time I fished the North Coast Rendezvous we had to really yard the fish to the boat to avoid having our fish taken by sea lions.  Makes for some real excitement though!

Any good guide in that area will have a backup river option if the bay conditions are not right.

I'm getting so antsy, i've almost forgotten about waterfowl hunting. Which is rare.  But it's so dry anyways haven't seen a lot of birds moving on this side anyhow. I'm focused on hitting the silvers in the river as soon as we get some rain.

I know we'll have a good time, and it's really about getting out with my family more than anything. The fish will just be a bonus.
