Nuts for baiting deer?
« on: November 11, 2012, 07:07:32 AM »
I have a couple of chestnut trees with about a bazillion chestnuts on the ground.  I read that deer like peanut butter so I wondered if they would eat nuts?  Any experience with something like that?

Throw a few dozen in the food processor to make chestnut butter.  Spread it on your in-laws landscaping, and see if the deer come eat it all.  You can call it research, thus staying out of trouble with the wife.  Video-report your results here, please.

:chuckle:  The logistics of spreading chestnut butter on my in-laws landscaping make the idea impossible.  But that doesn't detract from  the chuckle I got from the idea none the less!

I made my Pop Warner football team pick up acorns before practice back in October. I had quite a few acorns by the time they were done. They have been in the bait pile for a month....still. I thought it was going to be money in the bank. No dice! I have used acorn rage with great success but whole acorns not so much.

I have big bag full of dried chick peas. Tried something and it didn't work out. Think that'll work? Friend tried whole acorns with no success, so he went back to the processed bait.

Chick peas (aka garbonzo beans) will work awesome.  Used a mix of wheat and garbonzo beans earlier this year and the deer loved it.  On another note I have tried the processed pea pellets used for livestock feed and the deer wouldn't even touch them.  Corn, apples, garbs, and MGM have all worked really well for me in the past.

They are getting put out then mixed with some grain. What about let over garden squash? Anybody ever try it?

Thanks

I throw squash over my garden fence.  If it breaks open, then they will hollow it out.  Same with pumpkin and especially watermelon.
