After starting this post I found out I knew 3 of the 10 tag holders . 2 of them already went and my grandpa's hunt is tomorrow. Both of them got good bucks. One of them being a Real heavy 24"  4 point with a kicker off one side. The other is a heavy 24" 4 point.  From what they said there are some monsters runnin around there if he can get on one. I guess the fog's been really bad over there the past few days so hopefully it clears up for him. I'll be waiting anxiously with knife in hand ready to skin it for him tomorrow, I'll be posting his pics tomorrow night. Thanks everyone for the input

You said your grandpas hunt is tomorrow.  I have heard they schedule your hunts as day hunts.  Does that mean you just get one day total for the whole season or just one day at a time then its the next hunters turn?  So if your grandpa doesn't get one tomorrow is he done or will he get another chance or a few more chances????  How does that all work?

Each tag holder gets one scheduled day to hunt... thats it. If you don't get one I think thats it, but I'm not sure. I'll find out.

I understand area 201 hunts.what I do not understand is the ability to move PLYWOOD SHEETS TO LEASED GROUND! if Steven's has his own unit it should have a unit defination in the game book. this is nothing but a baiting situation and should not be accepted by sportsmen. he is leasing more ground 'and it falls under the "buckrun" unit without oversight'

Tell your grandpa he wants to hunt closer to Stratford for the nicer bucks.  Better genetics in that area for better scoring deer.  Once you get closer to Wilson Creek you may get a tiny bit more width, but smaller forks.
Dreams are forever on the mind, realization in the hands.

If you look at the Grant county assessors tax records, you will see that there are two circles of public land on the east side of Billy Clapp lake, within the 201 boundary but accessible from the county road. There is also public land on road 22, just as you drop down the hill towards Wilson creek, along the Highway between Stratford and the Wilson Creek turn off. I have not hunted these yet, but intend to in the future. I'm sure from speaking to friends, that you will be harassed into thinking this is private land. I have friends who have had successful, one day hunts in area 201.

One of the sections mentioned above used to be Eddie Bauer's land and he sold it to the state.  It was marked public hunting and was only a half square mile if I remember right.  It ran right up to the cliffs on the east side of the lake and was designed for pass shooting geese for the most part.  I was in search of a Beazley doe a few decades ago and seen deer tracks in there.  Shortly after  the Buckrun crew was waiting for me to leave and pretty much escorted me out of the county.  I pulled over on the edge of the road and said, "what's up?" and was told to move on because they even owned the side of the county road.  That ordeal was a bad experience I will never forget.

We used to pass shoot geese on the firing lines on the south east side of Billy Clapp lake.  It's state land around that end of the lake also and I had seen deer in there too but this was before Buckrun even existed.  There's got to be more deer in there now then ever before and I was always tempted to hunt it for 3pnt bucks, but it's too long a walk going across the dam.

Buckrun is a joke and always has been in my opinion.

Wow...this is almost like politics.....

By that I mean, not much middle ground.  It's a real love or hate relationship  :dunno:

Congrats to your grandpa!

Private property with there own seasons.  Throw the public a bone. a very limited amount of tags. This place sucks! There season starts after all of us push the deer into his unit. His free tags are all about doe control with a few buck tags for bait.

Congrats to your grandpa!

Nice synopsis Gringo.  (I like the avatar).  You called it dude,  Hater Here.

Read other posts about the WDFW not happy about their Mafia operation and would like to here more about this for entertainment value if someone would like to share.

It's all about the money isn't it?  How much money did Bucksruns get for for those horns?  What about the Mafia's "take" that nobody knows about?  I consider those doe tags on their land prostitution.  Anybody who participates in prostitution is a low life.

So those who are happy with their experience at bucks run:  Are you really proud of that buck from the Mafia?  You bucked up the bucks..........for a one day hunt... and the crew gave you a buck for statistical purposes.

I heard that buckrun has public land within the property but it is all land locked. If that is the case I have a problem with someone profiting of public land. I am all for management of deer herds to get quality animals but not for personal gain on public ground. I don"t know where the boundaries are so I can't look it up on a map? Has anyone heard the same thing? This is just what I have heard.

A lot of public land is landlocked by private... Why would it be his fault if he didn't, or wasn't able to purchase it????

I went on one doe hunt there for a youth... I don't think I met Stevens but the guy who pretty much told us where to go was nice and polite... He even came up with a quad and hauled the kid and deer to my truck while I walked back... And two of the bucks we saw were in the 170's and one closer to 190's!!! I made the kid hold off on 3 does just so we could watch the bucks!!  :chuckle:   If you can see that kind of quality deer in such a small time frame... Maybe 2 1/2 hours... He's doing something right...
the public property use to have a public road to it....
