Elk Area 1010
« on: October 15, 2012, 12:31:34 PM »
Was looking into future hunts (next year maybe). Can someone explain this area? Looks like the Dayton unit... Right?

I could be wrong, but I think it is almost all on private land.

:yeah: Outside national forest if it is the area I am thinking, but would need to look it up to be sure. Area descriptions are in the back of the regs.

I think is the area in the Dayton unit that is mostly private land they "set aside" to offer landowners more odds of drawing  special permits on their land. I think I am mostly accurate in my assessment, but if I am wrong feel free to correct.

It is virtually 100% private.

That's what I gathered from the description. Just wanted to make sure...

This unit was created to solve a problem they had in the Dayton unit.  the problem was that when they gave out all of the Dayton big bull tags the majority of the animals where killed in the National Forest.  there was a large number of elk on private land outside of the Nat forest and the big bulls where not being hunted.  The people that had access to these lands where putting in for the Dayton area but due to the massive number of people putting in where never drawn and so the big bulls in the unit where not being hunted.  It is an excellent area for large trophy animals but you need to have access secured before you put in for the hunt.

Don't let this get you down.  There are areas in 1010 that if you do your homework and talk to land owners that would let you hunt if you drew the big bull tag.  I have seen where private land owners, that wont let you hunt there land for spikes, that will let someone with a big bull tag on to hunt.  Hope the information is helpfull.

Very helpful info guys. I was thinking about the late archery possibility for a cow. Might just have to stick to unit 163 if I decide to go that way.

It is all private, there may be a sliver here or there with a FFTH sign on it.  :dunno:

It's by Maloney mt.  A pretty good chunk but it get hit by lots of people during rifle due to the antlerless tags given outside of the national forest.

This is an image of Elk Area 1010 using Hunting GPS Maps software. The elk area boundaries are in red. White areas are private land.
